Walnut Hollow 10 Piece Whittlers Carving Kit

Wood is nice and easy to cut. This was the first time I got really odd sizes and small wood in a bag. Not a big deal, just know it might happen with grab bag type stuff.

I'm a beginner at wood carving, and this pack of wood has been great for small projects to practice on. There's a decent assortment of small, almost cube types of wood, and quite a few longer rectangular ones. So far, I've successfully carved a small ornament for my partner's grandfather, as well as a business card stand / holder for my buddy's birthday. The wood is also very malleable, and easy to carve. Be careful about watching the grain, as I carved off more than I meant to a few times. Definitely would recommend this for beginners at wood carving!

Smaller than expected but nice.

Great little bag of blocks. Some small ones for a small figure and some just about right for carving little people. No knots, clear straight grain and no splits or checking. Seems like a good way to get started in whittling or carving of small figures. It might be less expensive to cut up a big piece or basswood, but these sure are handy to have around when you get the urge to sit down and make some wood chips.

These little blocks are very easy to carve and made my projects really fun. Very happy with purchase.

I purchased this bundle of basswood to see how useful it was. For beginners I'd recommend getting some larger pieces of wood to start on. While these can be used by a carver with some experience, I think they are small for a new carver to work on and have enough size to adjust for mistakes. Hopefully a new carver is aware they should wear safety thumb and finger guards or protective tape on the Carving hand (one holding knife) and a carving glove made with Kevlar or steel threads. Holding a small piece of wood with a glove can feel slick. I've been carving for over 50 years and would say the bundle will better serve more experience carvers. I would be pleased if someone gave me a pack since I do a good bit of small carvings. Netsuke and geometric pieces.

The wood blocks are perfect for a beginner trying out new techniques or for someone who needs this size for a project. Perfect for carving little birds, wood spirits, or anything you can think of. Wood is soft, easy to carve, it's not polished smooth but it's not so rough that you may get a splinter while whittling. Very happy with this purchase and have purchased 2 more bags.

I got to say, after not having picked up a knife for many years, this was just what i needed to pick myself up out of my funk. This stuff carves like butter if your knife is stropped food. I did find a few blemishes, but who cares. I'm relaxing and whittling. For the price and therapeutic relaxation you can't beat it. Plus i gave one of the bigger pieces to my kid to try her skills whittling. Will most definitely be buying more

Greetings, I must confess that, with my wife at the hospital, with Alzheimer and a cancer of the lung, and everybody who wants a good review there is no more time left for whittling. I am sure that those who read my chronicles, do not believe that asking for a good review means a good review; because if I do that I will lose all my credibility and a reviewer you give not his own belief but sells his favors to anyone you can pay, in money, compliments or any other form of flattery or gifts and so on would not only be worthless to others but a shame to his own self. I know very well those kinds; you know that whenever I review an item, I put my word in the balance if I make a mistake I will apologize but I am not here to write fairytales about unworthy products because I received a letter by those who own the company of Whittlers kit. Generally, the review is already written.But not this time. My readers, I must excuse myself for such a preamble, but sometimes things should be said frankly. Now back to business: this wood id for scooters of any age, it is like Tintin for those of 7 to 70 years old, so by essence, this wood is not merely a piece of a tree, it is a perfect piece of tree and them took the effort to cut it in small pieces for those who begin or those who cut small things like pieces of Chess. I bought a pack when I opened it I did take the tiny blocks one by one, to look for the smallest imperfection like knots, cuts, anything that could jeopardize the result of long hours of hard work.We have to understand that between Michelangelo is or was, there are some humans who live forever through the work they have left us, I am nothing, a beginner, a child who have given his best to be Michelangelo. so If you gave him bad blocks, the good wood will never have a chance to communicate with the carver. Smaller than I thought but seem good enough for small projects. Might give them to the kids since they're so small.

Carved a bunch of stuff with these, my first attempt at basswood and im not a wood expert but these were certainly awesome to carve, just a little exoensive though.

Good finish and look overall. Pieces of wood a little smaller than expected with largest pie being 1*2*6 roughly. wood light enough but as for whittling product was way too hard for my needs. Had to use saw instead.

wood is very soft and pleasant to carve into. pieces are small though. also the softness of the wood makes it unsuitable for certain projects.
