Field Guide to Trees of Southern Africa: An African Perspective (Field Guide To... (Struik Publishers))

If only other countries had tree guides like this. Guides to birds can be found for any country; very few countries have tree guides. The most important feature of this 2nd edition is the added appendix of 87 pages of photographs of full trees; an average of 6 photos per page. I always want to know what the tree looks like! The book is organized in 43 groups by leaf and stem characters. This key of sorts is on the inside front and back covers. The index gives both common and Latin names, but you have to go to the description page to find the page which shows the full tree. The even-numbered page describes one or two species with the facing page of 5 to 7 photos of closeups of leaves, flowers, fruit. So Colophospermum mopane and mopane in the index refer you to page 440, and that page tells you that the full tree photo is on page 667. In addition, there are 16 pages of 110 families described, which is really helpful.You will be able to identify upwards of 1 000 species with this book which covers not only the country of South Africa, but also Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, and the south part of Mozambique south of the Zambezi River. The second author has made it his mission to photograph every tree in this region, both in flower and in fruit.

While the printed version is excellent - his e-version is useless for identifying an unknown tree because here are no page numbers to tie into the identification keys

確かに書名通りで，フィールドガイドです。詳しい特徴を知りたい人には，少し物足りないかもしれません。

... aber für die nicht einmal 23 Euro, die ich bezahlt habe, ein unglaublich erstklassiges Buch. Es wiegt allerdings stolze 1,4 Kilogramm. Da werde ich wohl lieber bei den Bäumen die mich interessieren Blätter, Blüten, Früchte, Rinde und die Gesamterscheinung fotografieren und dann daheim eine Nachbestimmung versuchen.Bei der Blick-ins-Buch-Funktion hier im deutschen Amazon war allerdings nicht der Buchrücken abgebildet. Dort las ich nun mit leichtem Erstaunen, dass von den 2100 im südlichen Afrika heimischen und den zusätzlichen 100 eingebürgerten Baumarten "nur" gut 1000 in diesem Werk behandelt werden. Bei 730 Seiten, 1,4 kg und 23 Euro ist das für mich kein Problem. Bei einigen der artenreichen Gruppen kommt man wahrscheinlich immer noch bis zur Gattung. Aber vor allem wäre ich vor einem Doppelband bis 1460 Seiten, 2,8 kg und 46 Euro wohl möglich zurückgeschreckt.

Nachdem wir bereits mehrere einfache Bestimmungsbücher mit nur wenigen sehr häufigen Baumarten besitzen, musste es jetzt dieser Field Guide sein. Da wir vermehrt in den Südafrika Urlauben auch Bäume und Büsche ablichten, ist dieser Guide ein absolutes Muss. Wir konnten damit alle von uns fotografierten Baumarten bestimmen, also volle Punktzahl.
