A Brighter Summer Day (The Criterion Collection) [DVD]

This movie is long and the climate it depicts is harsh. Definitely not light entertainment. But it is totally remarkable, if only for the insight it gives into the roots of Taiwan's post-World War II woes. Also, it's empathy with its leading characters--the murderer anti-hero, his unwittingly corrupted but honorable father, and the sexually-lost heroine who falls victim to the protagonist--all astonishing. A great movie by a great director.

I saw the original version in SF Film Festival. I remembered there were several intermissions due to the length of the movie. After the film I was walking in space. Just couldn't come out from that state of mind. A beautiful and tender film.

Incredible movie. Very long movie and yet I didn't feel it drag

Growing up in Taipei during the 60s.The formation of street gangs and the violence it brings along.The story has a tragic ending and it is very well presented.This film is very different from YiYi.

Beautiful scenery, well acted.

Gorgeous night time and daylight cinematography. Great storytelling. Long film that rewards your patience. Immaculate restoration. One of the greatest films of Taiwanese cinema.

A cinema classic. Well worth your time watching a master director do his best work.
