Delicious Clove Flavor! Will Buy Again!
I like hard candy, and finding other than the standard butterscotch disks or starlight mints can be difficult at times. I wanted to create a mixed assortment of flavors that was similar to spice Gum Drops, so I bought 7 flavors of the Claey's candies. Here are my opinions on each flavor:• Licorice- This is okay, but I consider myself a Licorice "Connoisseur" and the flavor isn't deep enough for my liking. If I were interested in licorice flavor alone, I'd buy another brand, even if it wasn't a hard candy.• Clove- This is AMAZING, and I would definitely buy it again. The flavor is very distinct and is "spot-on" to what I think Cloves taste and smell like.• Anise- Sometimes substituted for Licorice, it's interesting to compare and contrast this against the actual Licorice flavor. This didn't taste all that interesting to me, and seemed even less flavorful than the Licorice. I won't buy it again. Although it doesn't seem to add much to my spice assortment, it doesn't distract from it either.• Peppermint- Although it's easy to find peppermint hard candy, this one is really good, and complements my "spice mix" very well. Would definitely buy again.• Cinnamon- It's getting really hard to find good Cinnamon hard candy, especially after Jolly Rancher's Fire Kisses were discontinued. This is a pretty good replacement for those, but has a different mouth feel. I would buy again. Nice addition to my spice mix.• Sassafras- Wow. So, good. It's an unusual flavor, but it somewhat citrus-like, and complements the other flavors very well. I'd definitely buy again.• Horehound- Meh. I wasn't as familiar with this flavor when I decided it seemed "old-timey" and would complement my "mix" of flavors. I could do without it. I don't hate it, but it's not something I'd buy again. One thing I find odd is that Claey's can't find more distinct colors to make it easier to tell which candy is which flavor. There are two basic shapes that I call "footballs" and tube-like "cylinders." (See picture.) You can see how close all the red and pink flavors are, and it's pretty hard to tell them apart. Mixed together in a bowl, the 7 flavors mostly appear black, red, and orange.I have not tried any of the fruit flavors, but I think these candies are a real hit. I highly recommend.

Mild flavor.
Don't expect a blast of intense flavor. I've reorder this item twice. My wife thinks the flavor is too bland.

An Unusual Candy Flavor
I originally found this candy at the State Farmers' Market in Asheville, NC about a year ago. I also bought three types of dried beans that I had never seen: Yellow Eye, Speckled Butter Beans and October Beans. Seasoned with a good meat, all three of these beans fell short. The Yellow Eye had a hint of flavor of a good pot of Black Eyed Peas. The Speckled Butter Beans were not quite as good as large white butter beans, and the October Beans were reminiscent of Pinto or Kidney beans.I couldn't quite remember what the flavor of the candy reminded me of, but it had something to do with Christmas and my childhood. There used to be a hard sugar candy, with red stripes, and yes, "cloves". Give this clove flavored candy out instead of a lemon drop.

An Acquired Taste...
01/02/13: Yeah, I continued trying these. To me there is a lingering, bitter after taste, and the actual Clove flavor besides being just strong is kind of stale for lack of a better word. We're not sure what to do with these things as we can't find anyone who likes them either. Again, the majority of Claey's candies are excellent and nostalgic for those of us who grew up with these flavors. Ginger is my personal favorite. Horehound is my husband's. But Cloves are a no.I like cloves and I like Claeys ginger and cinnamon drops very much, so thought I would give cloves a chance. Someone mentioned that the clove taste was not strong so I thought these might be another good option.Well, not for me. I agree that the Clove flavor is not overpowering, but sweetened cloves, just on their own, are not the hard candy for me. The bag has to be finished so if anything changes I'll provide an update.
