I am very worried about purchasing this even though it's on someone's Christmas list. The newer reviews from 2012-2014 are very poor. Any thoughts?

Yours is likely an outdated question, but let me give my opinion of labyrinth in general. I bought this for my granddaughters this past Christmas of 2019. I have no feedback from them to date. I would bet it's collecting dust and I'll tell you why. Kids today lack the patience for a challenging game like this. My opinion. It's not an easy game. It takes time to master this game, but once you go all the way, you know you've accomplished something. This particular game helps young kids develop good hand and eye coordination. It improves their dexterity. It can improve a child's ability to be patient, that good things don't always come easily. I grew up in a household of five kids and we got labyrinth one Christmas when I was about 6 or 7. All of us were on this game when we weren't outside playing. It took me a few years to master this game and that was so many years ago. I can't attest to the quality of this model. It's wood as was the one I grew up with. As long as the knobs are accurate, meaning they're sensitive (in a good way) to the slightest turn with your hands, then the product should be fun and fine. Don't drop it of course, nor step on it, nor spill liquid on it, and the "cheap wood" comment I read needn't apply. I mean balsa wood will hold up if you take care of it. I'm telling you all this because of all the games, and we had so many, this was our favorite. Of course we had this game before all the gadgetry available for kids today. Can labyrinth be frustrating? Oh hail yes, but the cherry on top comes when you successfully reach the end without dropping the ball in the hole. My recommendation is "buy it". Have the kids put the smart phone down and play this game at least until they master it. You can even offer some kind of a prize to them once they master it.

What is the object of the game? How do you play?

Just turn the knobs to balance the steel ball from start to finish; the closer you get to the goal, the more points you score. But be careful, or the ball may fall through a hole and send you back to the beginning. Develops motor skills, concentration, perception, reasoning and--most of all--patience!
