Utterly brilliant!
THE WITCH’S HEART by Genevieve Gornichec is utterly brilliant. It gives a voice to the witch, Angrboða (the mother of Hel, the wolf Fenrir & the Midgard serpent Jormungand), an often-overlooked character who receives just a few lines in the Eddas. This novel will charm, captivate and move you in equal measure. It will also turn your view of Norse mythology on its head. Characters you thought you once hated you will come to love while characters you thought you once loved you will come to hate!

Creative Retelling
Wow, this book! I love Norse mythology, and when I found this new retelling, I had to read it. And I'm so glad it didn't disappoint! The story follows Angrboda, who, after being burned alive three times by the gods, seeks refuge in the Ironwood. There she meets Loki, the trickster god, who returns her heart to her. The two fall in love and, over time, have three children: Hel, Fenrir and Jormungand. I won' go into too much detail regarding their fates. If you're familiar with the myths that inspired the story, you know what happens to them.Angrboda is a seeress, and after finding out what awaits her children (and all the nine worlds), she's determined to change history.I'm a huge fan of retellings, and I'm glad that I've found this book. It's such a fresh and creative approach and literally kept me glued to the pages.Angrboda is a great powerful heroine, a witch who can see the future. At the same time, she remains relatable, and I cared deeply for her. I love that the story is told from her viewpoint. Her story is heartbreaking yet so so beautiful at the same time.I didn't know what to make of Loki. He could be charming but annoying at the same time. Sometimes I just wanted to wipe that smirk off his face. But to be honest, Loki is the trickster god, the sly one, so Genevive Gornichec described him just the right way - being annoying is just a part of him. I liked her interpretation a lot. Both the story and the way it's told reminded me of Circe by Madeline Miller. If you liked that one, are interested in (Norse) mythology, strong female characters, and gods (!), I'd highly recommend The Witch's Heart.
