The Dragon Defenders - Book One

my 7 year old absolutely loved this book. he begged every night for the next chapter and even started reading it himself. language is ideal or starter readers as it is simple enough for them to gain confidence while also learning new words along the way. print size is good and chapters are short which kept his interest. we have just finished the first book and are about to start the second. my only very minor complaint is the cover of the book curls easily and doesnt stay closed when not being used, but the story is fantastic.

Definitely read this. It's probably in my top three favourite books. Paddy is thrill seeking and Flynn is just awesome. I have loved reading these books. Also, download the AR Reads app because the animations bring the words to life. William, aged 8.

My son was very excited at trying out AR on this book! None of his other books have this feature. He is a very advanced reader for his age. This book is very easy for him to read but he still enjoyed the story a lot. I would recommend this book for children age 6-7 if they are very confident reader. I pitched to 6-7 years old based on my son's reading ability.

So I gave this book to my boy (9) who LOVES reading. He started the book, and told me it was a really exciting story about boys and dragons. At page 52 he said that he needed to use my phone and download an app, because the book has a secret message that could only be read with the app. I told him that he surely doesn't need an app to read a book (what if a kid's reading alone in bed at night, for example?), and that they just added this in for kids who don't like reading, to reward them with screens or something. But he said he wouldn't know what the message says, so in the end I let him use my phone. Then I saw him skip through the whole book to decrypt all of the messages in one go, not bothering to read the story in between. AND THEN he put down the book and gave up reading. Seriously. Publisher fail. Trying to get down with the kids by linking books to screens. Reminds me of that famous psychology experiment (Lepper and Greene) where children who liked drawing either were free to draw pictures for the sake of creativity or were told that they'd be rewarded if they drew. After a while, the reward system was stopped, and lo and behold, the latter group of kids were suddenly no longer interested in drawing.

We have read the first 3 books with our 7 year old who loves dragons and adventures! He absolutely loves it. The only thing is he wants to read the whole book in one go it's so exciting! Good messages about team work, compassion and resilience too.
