Shows the Heart of Superman!
Sam Liu’s 2011 film “All-Star Superman” features a script by Dwayne McDuffie based on Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s 12-issue series of the same name that ran from 2005-2008. The story begins with Superman (Jamie Denton) assisting Dr. Leo Quintum (Alexis Denisof) in studying the sun when they are attacked by a booby-trapped clone made by Lex Luthor (Anthony LaPaglia). While he defeats the clone, he receives an overdose of solar radiation, leaving him temporarily overpowered, though dying. Superman wants to spend his remaining time with Lois Lane (Christina Hendricks), so he reveals his secret identity. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor is arrested for his actions and sentenced to death. Superman offers Lois the opportunity to see the world as he does, giving her a serum that will grant her powers and make her a Superwoman for 24 hours (this evoking a 1943 story from “Action Comics” no. 60). Later, Clark interviews Lex Luthor. When the Parasite attacks, Clark stops him without revealing his secret identity, leading Lex to admit his respect for Clark as both a journalist and a man. Superman has a couple other battles and even encounters some lost Kryptonian astronauts, but his final battle against Luthor is particularly poignant. Luthor steals the super serum, but Superman uses a gravity generator to remove the powers. As they fade, Luthor has a brief glimpse of the world as Superman sees it and weeps at his earlier ignorance. Superman tells Luthor that, if Luthor really cared, he could have solved the world’s problems at any point, leading Luthor to admit that he was wrong. Like the comics, the story ends on a particularly emotional note befitting its premise. The film is very much a tribute to the pre-Crisis, Silver Age Superman with things like a cosmic anvil and time telescope. While these elements could have appeared cheesy, they instead give the film a lot of charm. Liu perfectly captures why Superman matters and why his comic book adventures have inspired people for 80 years. Bonus features include a preview of “Green Lantern: Emerald Nights,” a look at what was then the next DC Animated film, “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse,” a documentary about how Grant Morrison revamped Superman in the original “All-Star Superman” comic books – directly referencing the Silver Age stories of Mort Weisinger and others for how they balanced fantasy and humanity – and two cartoons from Bruce Timm’s “Superman: The Animated Series” – “Blasts From the Past,” parts 1 & 2. These episodes involve Superman freeing a Kryptonian named Mala (voiced by Leslie Easterbrook) from the Phantom Zone and her adjustment to Earth. The character closely resembles Ursa from “Superman” (1978) and “Superman II” (1984) and was imprisoned for following a Zod-type character, General Jax-Ur.“All-Star Superman” is a must-watch for all fans of the Man of Tomorrow!

Impressively made, but not my cup of tea.
The voice actors do a solid job in this movie. The plot is very nuanced, emotional and sweet. The character development is good. The comic book mythology couldn't have been much better. All of this I appreciated a great deal, but I still didn't quite like this movie. I'm more of a DC movie and TV series fan than a comic buff and so I couldn't quite appreciate this movie as much as a regular reader of Superman comics (something that I suspect will b true of many, although not all, fans). Things could have been explained just a little better. I got this movie because I was interested in seeing the Bottle City of Sandor play into a film, but it's only onscreen for less than a minute with barebones exposition, and even though Superman taking the city to another planet is a major plot point it happens almost entirely offscreen and with no emotional payout. The highlight of the movie for me was Luthor. His motivations isn't exactly new here, but their handled extremely well, and with a character arc that couldn't have been done much better.

SUPERMAN animation at its BEST
I can honestly say that this take on the superman story is the best iv'e ever seen. both emotionally and suspense wise the movie fully delivers on all fronts. Iv'e been away from superman the comic for quiet some time - but have seen all of the DC movie material that have been available, but non of the other renditions of Supermans story comes close to this one - This knowing that most of the material is from Morrison's: All Star Superman Comic series - the movies overall style is true to the Comic version with bright colors, light humor and great scenes. The Drawing are fabulous reminding me of the Japanese Anime style, at some points but still with a strong American pen style, voice overs are very good and believable, poses etc. are just wow - there's simple so many good moments in this Movie that its hard not to get surprised on every new picture frame. At one point i was thinking: " all this goodness must end soon" but no the movie kept going on with some new cool stuff to marvel over. i guess this movie has all the trademarks of good old solid craftsmanship, teamwork and love towards the superman legacy - witch are very visible when handling old classic elements from other alternative superman comic stories that have been weaved nicely into the story.end note: i felt a closure to the superman epos, witch was nice. This is the superman i want to remember..thank you DC for making this possible

The Death of Superman
Superman is dying due to the Sun's radiation poisoning. This is Lex Luthor's ultimate revenge on the Man of Steel. Before he goes off into the wild blue yonder, Superman decides, among other things that happens in this film, that it's time to reveal his true identity to Lois Lane and also giving her a birthday present she'll never forget. The movie is well animated with sharp bright colours. I love the drawing of this Lex Luthor. The DC Universe team rarely disappoints and this movie is no exception.A must see for die hard DC and Superman comic fans.

Very faithful to the comics.
I bought this not because I'm a Superman nut - in fact he was too perfect. I always preferred the Batman and all his failings. However, bought this to complete my superhero DVD collection and very pleased I did. I collected this series of comics and feel that despite having to leave certain parts of the comics out, that this is a faithful homage to said comics. And for once Superman wasn't annoying and righting wrongs within seconds. He had failings, too! A very competent film which was highly enjoyable and one I'd watch again. Well done, DC.
