Math-terpieces: The Art of Problem-Solving Review: Great book-- the pictures in the preview don't do it justice! - I'm so impressed with this book and can't wait to use it with my Special Education class. The pictures in the preview were confusing, but I went ahead and bought a copy based on the good reviews. The concept is as follows: on the left side of each set of pages, there is a picture of a famous piece of art and a riddle, asking the reader to find x combinations that will make y (3 combinations that will make 7, 5 combinations that will make 10... that sort of thing). On the right side are several groups of objects from the artwork-- abstract eyeballs for Picasso, ballet slippers for Degas. The objects are arranged in sets of 1, 2, 3, 4, and so forth. From the sets available, the reader is able to find multiple combinations of objects to reach the goal number. I'm sure that's not any less confusing that the pictures... but it's really cute and will be great for improving addition skills and overall numerical fluency... well, and cultural exposure, too! I highly recommend this book! Review: Cute book! - My 7 year old loves both Math and Art. I would highly recommend this book for kids who like either or even use it as a teacher gift!

Informational for math, not so for art.
Before reading the book and playing with it with my kids, I was going to give this a lower review, but despite my dissapointment for having little value teaching about artwork, it's a great book. There is so much math in many masterpieces and it would be amazing to have a book that used different great pieces to illustrate this (for instance, patterns, which is a grade 1/2 math lesson is easily taught using Mondrian). This book does not do this at all, in fact, the artwork is just pretty backdrop to the math learning and grouping. So, I guess my bone to pick is the illusion that the reviews gave that this taught something about art, it doesn't, but it is a neat formula to teach math.

Math and Art in a beautiful engaging book!
How I wish I had found this book when my kids were young! Tang has a great way of making math fun and teaching kids to find patterns. I have shared this book with the students I tutor in math and they love it!

Love this book!
This book has a famous painting on one page and a math riddle to practice different simple addition on the other. There isn't a lot of detail on the background of the artists or paintings but it is a fun way to introduce children to some works of art. The math problems are similar to "How many different ways can you add these groups together to make 8." My ten year old twins enjoyed taking turns looking for the different combinations and have asked to read it together again.

Art History, Math and Poetry all in one!
Absolutely fantastic. Just could not be better. What a great way to practice math facts! And there are famous artworks on each page with their name and descriptions! Plus I decided to analyze poetry with the cute little poems! Just a fantastic fantastic book for us!

Wow, what fun!
My 4 year old LOVES this book. She will often stop me during mid read to clap her hands and tell me how much she loves it. We started out with just getting one way to make each desired number and are working our way closer to getting all of the possible ones. I love how she has gone from random guessing to being able to predict and look for the correct grouping. She is also realizing when she has made a mis-step and needs to try a different combination. Since we now need to keep track of our correct solutions, she is learning more about writing numbers and her first few mathematical symbols. The art is fun too. Thank you Greg Tang!

Beautiful book
The art is amazing. My kids love counting the different things. They're not quite able to group yet, so it is a great book they'll be able to grow into.

It's good book but priced high, for the content the book gets exhausted pretty quickly, it's for children in 4-6 age group
