Plates open at the end to widest at 2". The plates are parallel at 3/4".

Is the product made in USA?

Nope, Taiwan. The packaging clearly shows this, and the country or origin is a lie. Irwin sold out the Vise-Grip brand in 2008 and moved all production to East Asia. The quality is terrible now. If you want a quality tool I'd recommend Channellock (USA) or Knipex (Germany).

Do these close flat? It looks like just the front edge touches the sheet metal.

No they don't close flat. The front edge "touch" first.
