exactly what I needed
I've owned this particular pair of running shoes for four months now and they are perfect! Before I purchased these, I had been searching for a long time for something exactly like them. Being in the Army, I needed a lightweight, minimalist style running shoe, that I can also use for cross-training. Considering only those specifications, you would think that there are a bountiful number of options to choose from, especially with the boom of minimalist sports movement. I'd thought so too, but I was dead wrong. I have probably the one of the worst type of feet when trying to find sports shoes. My feet are flat and wide, my toes and heel are relatively long, and my right foot is slightly (but noticeably) bigger than my left. I also wear size 14 shoes, sometimes size 13 depending on the manufacturer. I've tried Vibram's FiveFingers series. I've tried Merrell's Barefoot series. I've tried Brooks' (my previous favorite running shoe brand) Pure series. None of them fit right and the Brooks PureCadence 2 actually worsened my old knee injury.I was about to give up on lightweight shoes until I happened to chance come upon the Altra brand. Don't ask me how, I can't remember. I took a look at the website and was very intrigued by the functionality, design, and philosophy of the product line. I bought the Provision 1.5 because it matched closest to my needs. Because of the stability wedge that comes inserted out of the box, on first donning of the shoes my feet fit a bit too tight (mostly my right foot) and I thought this was another failure. I read online that it is meant to be removable so I did just that and wore the shoes for PT the next morning. Well, what a perfect chance to test them because I had quite a bit of running/sprinting that day. I can tell you that I had no problem at all with the sprinting or the running using a mid-foot strike. Four months later and my knee bothers me less than before, plus the shoes feel very comfortable with the wide toe box. Also, even with the thin amount of cushioning, the zero drop platform still affords me a sturdy enough feeling for squats and olympic style weightlifting. Great product for feet like mine. I will most likely buy the trail set as well.

Greatly Improved my Run
I really, really enjoy this shoe. This pair I'm buying online is my second pair of Altra Men's Provision since I had such great results with my first pair. The first one isn't quite worn out after about 8 months, while I tend to run just under 30 miles each week on average - normally around six miles five days a week. So far, the only part of the shoe that is worn is the strap on back of the heel. I would recommend not pulling it too much when putting the shoe on: take the time to untie and tie the shoe instead as this may be the one point of failure on this shoe. Although, even after the strap broke the rest of the shoe around it was sturdy enough to not take any additional damage. After I receive the new pair in the mail, I'd imagine I'll still have a short while with the first pair before the sole is too worn down and I choose to fully retire them.I initially chose this shoe because I wanted something closer to minimalist running shoes, without having to go completely without any support. These were the perfect balance for me. In addition, I've always hated the feel of 'toe shoes' and found them very uncomfortable, while regular running shoes always made my toes feel constricted. The extra wide 'toe box' at the front of these shoes gives me a lot of extra flexibility and power at the ball of my foot without ever feeling as though the shoe wasn't nicely attached to me.I think most people realize this, but these are strictly running shoes. The grip on the sole is not sufficient to use these shoes for hiking. They may be sufficient as a cross-training shoe, but the grip on the sole is not particularly defined for much other than running. I made the mistake of trying to go on a hike with these once and found myself slipping about in the mud. I wasn't too concerned, though, as it was a very flat hike that just happened to be on a rainy day, but be certain you'll want to have another pair of shoes to take to the trails.

Most Comfortable Shoes
These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I like the wide toe box and the level of cushion for everyday wear. They feel like you are wearing slippers. I actually don't use the Altra Provision 1.5 to run because I like a little more cushion (higher stack height) for running. I do wear the Provision 1.5 for everything else from going to the gym, using cardio machines, long power walks and just wearing them casually. Actually, they are so comfortable I wear them daily and don't like taking them off.I've have suffered from plantar fasciitis, arch pain and shin splints in the past but I don't experience that with these shoes. I liked these so much, I purchased the Altra Torin 1.5 for road running and the Altra Lone Peak 2.0 for trail running. It took a while to ease into them and I run differently (not heal to toe anymore), but now I am able to run more frequently than I have for over 10 years and pain free. The only criticism I have is sizing. The Altra shoes seem to vary between different models. Some models seem to run smaller. I've heard this has been corrected in the newer models which agrees with my experience. I normally wear a men's 9.0 and here is what I found:- Provision 1.5 seems to run small. I had to return the 9.0 because they were to short. My toes hit the front of the shoe. I ordered a 9.5 and they fit great.-Altra Torin 1.5 fit true to size. A 9.0 fit perfect.-Altra Lone Peak 2.0 fit true to size. A 9.0 fit perfect.I would recommend them to a friend.
