Fixed the problem. Phone works again.
Speaker had come loose in the earpiece of the old handset and rattled annoyingly. I tried prying the set open in order to fix it, being the cheapskate that I am, but it was hopelessly glued together. The replacement handset came quickly, in fact a couple of days early, and was inexpensive. It works perfectly and the phone is now back in service, just like new. I just plugged in the new handset and everything worked.
