Athletes, this works and it's far cheaper than Maurten but watch your gut
Bicarb has been all the rage lately so I thought I'd give it a try. It does work for athletic performance, but it will come with a rough gut. Don't drink it on an empty stomach and take it about 2 hours before the event. It's nice because if you get your clothes dirty at the race you can also use it to clean your kit.
