The Colour Of Magic: (Discworld Novel 1)

What a treat!
How much magic, peril and adventure, how many wizards, heroes, dragons and trolls, how much wit and laughter is it possible to squeeze onto a disc carried by just four elephants standing on a single, albeit giant, turtle? The sky is the limit, but only if your name is Terry Pratchett. The Colour of Magic will take you out of the grim reality of the year of the pandemic and into multiple fantasy worlds where everything is completely other-worldly and belly-laughingly hilarious.Twoflower, a tourist who arrives in the city of Ankh-Morpork (on its rougher side) acquires special protection from a (failed) wizard Rincewind, primarily because of his Luggage which is filled with riches the criminal fraternity of the city has never seen before. Like a caterpillar, The Luggage travels of its own accord, using its many busy feet, and that’s not even the most puzzling thing about it . Rincewind and Twoflower meet villains, dragons, trolls and all matter of characters who either assist or obstruct them on their travels. And then they come to the edge of the disc. I can’t say anymore but the story doesn’t end there – not quite, not once, and not in the conventional sense of the word.I reached for The Colour of Magic to shake off the blues of last year. I remembered reading I Shall Wear Midnight many years ago with my daughter, and I wanted to recapture that old magic. I definitely achieved that.

What’s the fuss about ?
I was recommended this series for my 11 year old , who is a prolific reader . He handed it back to me after 50 pages as he just couldn’t follow what was going on ... and wasn’t intrigued enough to persevere . So I had a go ... it took me a while to figure out was going on , more than the 50 pages my son managed. It was very densely and imaginatively written , lots of detail about the characters and their environs . Terry Pratchetts mind must have been a very crowded place! I liked the dry humour in places , but the plot itself really just didn’t grab me . The writing felt too detailed for the strength of the plot. I doubt I’ll pick up another Terry Pratchett book - a shame , my son works through authors so quickly

The beginning of a beautiful adventure!
There is not much for me to say that has not already been said about The Colour of Magic and Terry Pratchett's books. This was the first book of his that I read many years ago, followed by The Light Fantastic, but, after that, I read them in random order, as I would find them. When I heard of Terry Pratchett's death, I decided that the time has come to re-read the Discworld series and this time, in the correct order. The Colour of Magic is the very first of the series, the only one (as far as I am aware, I still have a few of the most recent ones that I have not read) that is not a standalone but a two parts story, along with The Light Fantastic, introducing us to the Discwold Universe and to many of the characters that we will be seeing in the following books. Rincewind is the very first protagonist and will star in a number of Discworldbooks. The style and expression are different from the following books but the humour (laughing out loud when reading in the bus to work!) and the philosophy (sometimes, it feels as if I can find the answers to all of life's big questions in here!) are present. It is very upsetting to think that there are no more Discworld novels, so I plan to take my time and enjoy re-reading them!Even though i have enjoyed other titles more, for me this book rates 5 stars because it is the one that got me hooked to this wonderfully crazy, magical, flat, literally flat, so different and yet, surprisingly similar to our own, universe!

Modern day classic
This is the one that started everything off. Thank the spirits that the publishers had faith. Not only is it a cracking ( or cracked) story, but on listening to it for the third time in a week, I realized there was a subtle dig at modern society, and rightly so. Well worth the investment.

The start of an adventure into the imagination
After listening to Sir Terry Pratchett through YouTube and the BBC, I have decided to correct a wrong and begin reading all the Discworld novels. This is the first one. I was not disappointed. This is a novel of some fantastic invention. The ideas within are fantastic and Sir Terry creates some wonderful images in the imagination. He describes the Discworld, and it is an amazing thing to behold. The adventures are great, but could appear a bit disjointed. This was not a problem for me. There are some stunning things here to keep your imagination sharpened. I think the imagination is very important. Highly recommended. I will certainly be reading more about the Discworld.
