how padded is the back and the straps?

The shoulder straps are strong and not overly padded. My teenage daughter uses this for school daily. She carries he laptop, lunch and books. No complaints at all. Her friend's parents have asked where I got it to purchase for their children.

Has anyone tried fitting in a 15" macbook pro?

I have a 15' Dell laptop that I fit in the bag along with my Ipad pro that is around 13-14 in together. On top of that I can fit a lot of other things in the bag at the same time.

Did your bag have a bad smell when you received it? If so, how long did it take to go away?

There was no smell when I received the bag.

Aside from the two small inner pockets, and inner laptop , and another large pocket? Suitable for flat documents or paper if laptop is already full?

I have a Mac Air, and use to put more papers inside the computer pocket, and if that was full, I would but my loose paper in a folder and put in the bag, I wouldn't fold.
