No. It works by preventing the door handle from being pushed down. When the door handle is activated, if the unit is properly installed, it essentially forms a strut and prevents the door handle being opened and the door moving simultaneously. It has to be hard up against something stable to keep it in compression. If the door is open it would fall over

Q: How much force in kg can this withstand? E.g. 150kg or 250kg?
