Surprisingly good. Surprisingly dark
Viewing this film twenty years after its release I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I was expecting a Kevin Costner era Robin Hood romp through the Highlands but it is much better than that. For one thing from a bit of clicking on the internet it seems that the film stuck fairly closely to actual events. Good performances from all the cast served to raise the film well above ordinary Hollywood fare. The Highland scenery is perhaps another 'actor' in the movie and looks wonderful, even if the same bit of moorland does keep cropping up from different angles. The film explores violence and abuse of women which adds a strong current of darkness to the story and there are quite a lot of sexual references so I think the 15 rating is right. A minor grumble with my copy of the DVD was the proportions of the image didn't fit the TV screen and was smaller than it could have been.So if you are thinking of making a historically based costume drama you could do far worse than using Rob Roy as your modelOverall

A rip-roaring adventure set in bleak Scotish highland scenery. Not to be missed
One of my favorite films.Tim Roth at his evil best. You just love to hate him. He steels the show as the dandy and expert sward fighting aristocrat Archibald Cunningham who loathes being sent to Scotland. He will do anything to increase his wealth, which he has gambled, drank and spent on expensive tailoring.A very good performance by Brian Cox as Archibald's slimy scheming sidekick and John Hurt as the unscrupulous Marquess of Montrose. All the while hard put-upon Liam Neeson, the leader of a impoverished cattle herding clan, Macgregor, and his long suffering wife, Jessica Lange, try to survive the harsh Scottish way of life. Some great sward fighting scenes.

Rob Roy DVD
Excellent film in every way. It is more historically based than Braveheart, with only the odd historical inaccuracy inserted to move the story along (e.g. Argyll being a Jacobite sympathiser, when in fact the entire Campbell clan and its leaders were loyal supporters of the Hanoverian UK government, as they had been of the Scottish government prior to the 1707 Union Treaty). The quality of acting by the main cast, set agaist the rugged Scottish scenery of the outdoor scenes, combined to make this such a good film. The main two protagonists, the (noble) hero Rob Roy played by Liam Neeson and the (evil) villain Cunningham played with such relish by Tim Roth, are well supported by the rest of the cast, and the costumes and mode of dress are entirely in keeping with the era of the early 1700's in which the action is set. The final showdown swordplay scene between Liam Neeson and Tim Roth is as good as any I've seen on screen, and much more realistic and dangerous looking than the more "swashbuckling" action of past efforts of the Errol Flynn-type Hollywood swordsmen. Well worth adding to your DVD collection, especially at today's bargain prices.

Joy for Roy
As others have stated this film was overlooked and in the shadow of Braveheart at the time, and while I love said film this was way and above the better film.Obviously artistic licence abounds so dont expect historical accuracy, but this film has all the right ingredients, even if it had an irishman playing a scot.Come on, I dont think Australia is in the highlands is it Mel"good on ya ya cobber nac mac"Gibson.Stunning performances all round in Rob Roy from a greasy John Hurt, to a fabulous bad guy in Tim Roth to an equally sneeky Brian Cox and his side remark of loving a wee bit of q..m in the mornin.Stunning scenery, compulsive tale and there you have, a fantastic highland fling, oops film.Sit back and enjoy...oh and a great soundtrack also.
