Classic at its true essence
This book is not a mere story but an account of India in the 1900s. This was one of the reason that I started reading this, to understand what was India and the society like a hundread years back.Premchand ji, is a personality who needs no introduction. Having read Godaan as a child, I was drawn to reading his works in the original lamgauge, Hindi with all the intricacies in the language and vocabulary. This doesn't disappoint.Nirmal starts off as a reality-driven and sad story with back to back sudden turns of events and how they were so common the society back then. The thought process of the people then, the family structure, the society dynamics and ofcourse the language-it is so worth reading. It's an entertaining read if you consider the language and the new unheard words you get to read.Otherwise, it's a sad account of the 1900s India with the poor state of women, young girls and widows with mismatched marriages, dowry and much more which I think everyone should explore at their own pace and understanding.
