Q: Why is Smoke alarm continuing with low whinning alarm?

1.) Make sure to re-set the smoke detector by holding down the test button after installing a new 9 volt battery. 2.) If after replacing the 9 volt back-up battery and resetting the alarm it still sounds the alarm, the alarm unit itself may need to be replaced. If the sensor in the alarm unit is worn out, replacing the battery will not help and the unit will have to be replaced. The sensors in the smoke alarm tend to last between 5 and 10 years. I hope this helps!

Yes. But you may have to change the connector.

Q: Do these require a box in the ceiling for mounting? I am wiring our new home now and it would be a good time to put them in if necessary

Yes. This is powered by a 120v interconnect circuit. It would be against code to terminate 120v wiring without a junction box. That said, “old-work” boxes are cheap and easy to install, and the smoke detector will mount to the ceiling.
