Children understand why we have different skin colors.
I love the book. I have a daycare with children from different ethnic and cultural groups. They all discuss skin colors. When I read it to a child from Japan she was amazed at how many skin tones that are not dark. I discussed it with the parents they had been explaining it to her. The books let her see the difference in skin hair and family dynamics of various colors in one family. The age of the child plays a major role in understanding skin colors. The ages attending my daycare ranges from 1-9 yrs old. Everyday we learn new things the 4-7 yr olds are expressing their sexual ideas.

If you feel uncomfortable reading the words, stop and think about how little kids feel hearing them, or where it is that little white kids learn them. (Hint: it's not from this book). My four-year-old made me read this 4 times in a road. Recent reesearch shows that kids learn to see race (and make subsequent negative value judgments) starting VERY young (like 2-3 years old). http://www.newsweek.com/even-babies-discriminate-nurtureshock-excerpt-79233 Books like Diggs' provide a very concrete way to explain that yes, there ARE different skin colors, that it is okay to point them out, but that it is NOT okay to see difference as bad. When grownups say "we're all equal", young children don't make the connection with racial discrimination. But when they read a book like this and see a little boy taught to love himself, and little white boys who make a bad choice (but then remain friends with Chocolate Me in the end), kids start to figure it out. This is a great book for having those conversations.

A great addition to your home library...
I seen this author on Regis and Kelly earlier this week and he described this book. I immediately loved the title and the concept. I have two kids with different colored skin than eachother. I thought this would be a fun read for them while also showing them that they should embrace their differences. It has fun illustrations and simple story line. My fave part is when the main character's mother tells her son, "Your smile makes me so happy, I could cry. No amount of real money could buy how it makes me feel for real." I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

The story is is good and the message is clear. Nice colorful pictures. Great for all children.
I liked everything about the book. Its about self-esteem. I purchased it for my great niece Rose for her Christening. Her very first book. (next to the bible of course). For now she can look at the pictures then she can grow into reading it. For now we will read to her. I've followed the authors successful career for many years. I love his work and now this book. Continued success Mr. Diggs VB

First I read some of the other reviews before purchasing this book for my 6 year old son. Some reviews said it actually delivered a bad message. I was More intrigued by this so I got it and read it first BEFORE reading it to my son. My son went to a predominately white school and somehow received the message that being white it BETTER so he would come home and say Mommy I want to be white. First I removed him from that environment (not just for that reason but that iced the cake). I purchased several black childrens books from amazon, showed my son all the books and he picked this one to read first. He got exactly what I wanted him to get from it, Love who you are. My son and I love this book. Good job Taye Diggs.

I was excited to buy this book to expand upon my daughters understanding of racism but was really disappointed. The "chocolate me" pages don't really flow with the other text so it is a bit strange to read aloud.

I bought this book for my boys aged 7, 5 and 4 and it is great to see how they warmed to the book straight away. It has made them more comfortable in their skin and they often refer to themselves as the 'chocolate boys'! Highly recommended read!!
