When Heaven Invades Earth 40 Day Devotional: A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles Review: Inspiring. Relevant. Powerful. Insightful. - WHEN HEAVEN INVADES EARTH by Bill Johnson is a modern, powerful treatise on the power of God. Written for today, the book is loaded with golden nuggets which will challenge, inspire and provoke the believer to seek God more fervently than ever. Johnson shatters the stale, dry, dead doctrines of much of today's church. Like a modern Wigglesworth or AW Tozer, he exhorts action and faith in the word of God. Johnson challenges the laziness and deadness of modern theology: "We are so entrenched in unbelief that anything contrary to this worldview is thought to be of the devil." He challenges the believer to act on his faith: "My faith is not just an abiding faith; it is active. It is aggressive by nature. It has focus and purpose. Faith grabs hold of the reality of the Kingdom and forcefully and violently brings it into a collision with this natural one. An inferior kingdom cannot stand." Johnson calls into question the preoccupation of the modern church with a settled issue: the work of the enemy. He writes, "Doesn't it seem strange that our whole Christian life should be focused on overcoming something that has already been defeated?" Johnson challenges the conventional as he seeks the fullness of what the Lord has for him, and us. An important book; just in time. Review: Are you ready to take the challenge? - One of the most quotable books I have ever read. In this landmark book Bill Johnson pleads his case that christianity is supernatural from beginning to end and that a gospel that isn't accompanied by signs and wonders, should be suspicious from the outset. The lives of christians should be filled with signs and wonders, because the live of our Master was filled with it and He commanded his followers to do what He did! The ministry of Jesus was characterized most by His miracles and He placed so much weight on this aspect that He stated "If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;" (John 10:37). How different the world would be today if the church would say what Jesus is saying here. "If you don't see us performing signs and miracles, don't believe what we are saying!" The book is very challenging and will probably make some believers feel very uncomfortable. For example the emphasis that Bill places on the word 'is' in 1 John 4:17 ("because as He *IS*, so are we in this world.") has challenged me a lot and thinking about how much I yet have to understand of what Jesus redemptive work has made me. It also shows how much in church can just be 'religion' (form without power) and can turn many once-powerful works of God into dead museums, no matter how much lights and funky music there is. I have some reservations as to whether I would recommend this book to a new believer, because I still believe that having a solid foundation in Scripture is paramount and we should be taking that as a guideline above manifestations like gold dust, feathers and glory clouds. But still, you have to wonder if you only know scripture, but never experience anything miraculous, how much you get the core and purpose of scripture: a living, breathing relationship with God Himself and Him manifesting His presence through you. A book that ihmo can be considered a true modern day classic that every christian should read.

I'm repenting in sackcloth and ashes
I've been so wrong about Bill Johnson, and this is the reason for my repentant title. I'm an ex new ager (10 years removed, love King Jesus, been a missionary, charismatic, walked in miracles)I saw the grave soaking sound bites and have kept Bill Johnson and Bethel at arms length. The Lord led me to start school for a Christian counseling major where this book was my textbook. This book is now in my top 3 of personally suggested Christian reading material. I was so wrong about Bill. He has such a beautiful passion for God, and such a way of speaking that oozes with the love and power of the Father. EVERY PAGE of this book has multiple highlights on it, not for school notes, but for personal Holy Spirit notes, revelation and gold nuggets of wisdom. I have my Amazon cart full of paper copies that I want to buy just to hand them out to believing friends. I also implore skeptics to know that there are times you may not agree with a sentence or paragraph in one chapter, but if you stick with the whole book, Bill humbly attaches an explanation or a reference note later that explains his thinking. Any time i may not have completely agreed with something he said, he brought humility and clarity to his stances later on. READ THE WHOLE BOOK before you make ANY judgements on Bill or his character. This man is a blessed servant of the Most High. My life has definitely been changed and impacted through reading this book and I am eternally grateful for the wisdom written in these pages.

Valuable ideas, sometimes a bit abstract
Bill Johnson is not for everyone. He is charismatic in his theology, and some people are going to disagree out of hand with many of the things that he says. Even for a Pentecostal like myself, there are some things that he says that cause me to push back a bit. However, there are many things in this devotional book that are extremely valuable for perspective and inspiration. There is an undercurrent in the work, a thread of thought throughout all of the entries, that essentially suggests we are living far below the standard God called the church to. Where Johnson’s charismatic roots come into play concerning that idea is seen in his focus on miracles and spiritual gifts as the evidence of the church’s anemic standards. He does not work against the idea of purity in behavior or righteous living, he seems to value those things highly, but he adds that element of spiritual power and demonstration as God‘s intention and plan for the modern church. He does not adopt a “hunker down” mentality for the church in the last days. Instead, he seems to suggest that the church is going to be allotted, and has been allotted, more power and more gifting because of the darkness of the days in which we live. I was challenged by this devotional in a good way, and his interpretation of scripture was unique - especially when compared to the Calvinist and mainline writers that most of us usually read or hear from. It is not an enormous time investment. Less than five minutes a day gets you through the 40 days of this devotional. But it does spawn much prayer. Some prayer because the content is convicting and there is a need for response in prayer. Other prayer is incited by working through some of the theological implications of Johnson’s interpretations. I found myself frequently praying for wisdom and insight after reading these entries.

A MUST READ PHENOMENON OF SPIRITUAL TRUTH AND CONVICTION
Perhaps the most refreshing revelation was that of the most grossly inaccurate teaching of leaven. As revealed in this book little infiltrated much causing much to become the perfection of what little “is.” The fear of what might not be feasible in the eyes of some has to become the courage and confidence of those that are fully persuaded and determined to see the true essence of the glory of the Lord revealed in the here and now as opposed to the sweet bye and bye. Excellence at its best!!!
