A long overdue collection of primary sources
Shepard's documentary history of de-colonization is, as far as I can tell, a first of its kind - and well past due. Its been over 50 years since the former colonies in Asia and Africa rid themselves of their European colonizers, but there has been a noticeable dearth of texts such as this. The introduction, in which Shepard broadly outlines the wide variety of experiences and processes of "decolonization", not only provides a solid historical foundation for the texts that follow, but gives insight into the complex nature by which European occupation was shed. The documents themselves similarly provide a variety of perspectives on the process, from Churchill's staunch desire to preserve and maintain the British Empire, to Nassir's philosophy on revolution to (one of my favorites), excerpts from Fanon's _Wretched of the Earth_ through Nkhrumah's "Last Stage of Imperialism." The particular strength of the text is the variety of voices, experiences and perspectives on this movement. A must-have text for any teacher of world civilization, and a worthwhile read for anyone interested in 20th century history.
