ST-EF500 3 x 8-Speed Brake/Shift Lever Set Black

Excellent replacement for my wife's older 3x8 REI MTB with disk brakes. Her OEM setup had separate shifter and brake levers but this integrated set worked wonderfully. Installation was very straightforward but there are some things to note: - if you plan to install these yourself, be SURE you have proper cable housing cutters. You can get away with using wire butt-connector crimpers to attach cable and housing end caps but please do NOT try to cut bike cable housings with regular cable or even bolt cutters - it won't work. You don't need the fancy Park cutters but do get an *actual* set of housing cutters. - this set DOES include new brake and shifter cables with housings, housing caps and cable end caps. - if you've never installed derailleur sets, do yourself a favor and watch a couple youtube videos on how to set them up and dial in the alignment and end stops. It's not complicated but a quick how-to video will save you hours of trial and error and ensure a proper installation that will preserve your drive train. Functionality is what you would expect from Shimano - solid build, smooth shifts and braking with all the adjustment you might need on a wide array of installations. Gear position indicators for front and back are very easy to read, if you're into that. Personally, we don't use them much but the red indicator and viewing windows on the shift levers are nice and clear and easy to read quickly. Shipping was a bit slow in my case for some reason. My package was in Illinois facility routing purgatory for a week causing my delivery time to be two weeks total but that wasn't a deal breaker for me. I don't think this was due to any fault of the seller. I'd order it again without thinking twice. Great value and solid product.

I replaced my aging Shimano Alivio RapidFire Plus shifters and it's riding like a new bike. They work great with my Shimano Deore 9 derailleurs. Installation took me about 20 minutes but I use to repair and rebuild bikes in college so it might take longer or shorter depending on experience level. Also I used my old brake cables so that saved me a bit of time. These shifters provide good positive feedback and actuation. My old shifters required more travel distance and force to shift so these felt effortless. I have only used them for about a month so don't know about durability yet but I'm hoping they will last me for a while.

Thomas Wallace posted that this set "DOES NOT" come with cables and housings. Amanda A. posted that it did. I can attest and agree with Amanda A. that this set "DOES, REPEAT DOES" come with shifter cables already attached to the shifters. Brake cables and housings "ARE" in the box also along with cables finishing ends. Everything you need "IS" in the box!!

I'm giving this shifter 4 stars because the right side shifter does not have an adjuster barrel. Every mountain bike I have ridden has had one, so I did not check before ordering. As it happens, my rear deore derailleur does not have an adjuster either, so I had to order a separate in line barrel adjuster. Otherwise, the shifter works fine.

Came with everything needed for a complete braking and shifting refresh. Easy to install if you are familiar with adjusting brake/shift cables!

I ordered this part to repair an old bike. I was assuming that I was getting the shifter, cable, and housing. When I read reviews several people received exactly that or more. Also, when I googled the part number that is what it is supposed to ship with normally. However, that is not what I received. I received the proper shifter mech and it looked and functions great! But, on the other hand, I did not have all those parts. I got the shifter and the cable. The cable is not at all helpful without the housing. When I first reached out to the seller I got an answer, "We are selling previous sellers extra stock, you get what I have." answer. So, the moral of the story, be careful. Quality is good but no guarantee on accessories.
