8.5x21 U-Series Papilio II Binocular suitable for watching objects both close-up and far away

I really liked these binoculars. They are lightweight, small and very portable and sturdy. I don't have experience with binoculars, so I don't have a good comparison point with others, but they looked clear during the day and were easy to learn to use and accommodate to my eyes. It's a bit hard to align them at first, but once you get the hang of them, they work quite well. I bought the 6.5x version for a trip (that included whale watching) and they worked quite well both for long-distance and short-distance viewing in daylight, although, off course they stand out for their ability to see very close objects. I would recommend them as general purpose binoculars without too much zoom and if want to use them for short distances. For longer distances and higher zoom, you might be better off with another model, though.

These binoculars have made my walks take way longer. I got them because I was interested in looking at bugs and plants and other small things with the extremely close focusing distance. What I didn't expect was for it to not only do that extremely well (like seriously I have never seen tiny things in so much detail it's amazing) but to also kind of replace my regular birding nocs. Now let me be clear, these aren't going to do much for anything further than 50 yards maybe, but how light they are and easy to use with the single smooth focusing wheel, you can easily use these entirely single handed!(It's surprisingly good for casual backyard birding with a beer in hand, you can easily focus on a bird in a tree and effortlessly change focus to a bird that just landed on a feeder 4 feet away from you) For viewing small things I don't think it gets better than these. They make everything so interesting, every bug and flower and tiny thing just looks so amazing. The textures everything has is incredible to see, even looking into someone's eye blew me away. Now for cons if I have to give some, there isn't really any protection nor a cover for the front end sight piece, though it does come with covers for where you look through. Other than that though I guess it could have also come with a microfiber cloth for the lenses and the included strap is not the best. Overall I'd say these are excellent for the price and I would highly recommend them to anyone I know even remotely interested in the whole world around them, including the tinniest of details.

I want to start by noting that I am not very experienced with binoculars. I originally bought these to use at musical performances so I could see the stage in more detail when seated farther back, even on a second floor. One of my main concerns was how well they would perform in darker environments, but they worked flawlessly in that setting. I had looked at binoculars marketed specifically for theater use, but many of them were far more expensive despite offering similar or even worse specifications. In comparison, these felt like a much better value. The eyecups are very comfortable, and I had no trouble keeping everything aligned while viewing, which made them easy and pleasant to use for extended periods. Since purchasing them, I have used these binoculars for a wide range of activities, including birdwatching, bug watching, hiking trips, and camping. They have performed well in all of these scenarios. After doing more research on the product, I can also confirm that the close-focus capability works exactly as advertised and is genuinely impressive. Being able to clearly view objects up close as well as far away adds a lot of versatility. Overall, I have been very happy with these binoculars and feel they are well worth the investment. They have exceeded my expectations and proven to be a surprisingly versatile and enjoyable piece of gear.

This is a decent though not spectacular binocular in the traditional sense. But the close focus capability of 18" absolutely IS spectacular! This "II" version has fully multi-coated optics and gives an impressive image for such a small device. It's decent for back yard birding and such. Not quite as nice as our high quality 10x42 but only in the sense it doesn't magnify quite as much and is not quite as bright in low light conditions. After comparing, I would be perfectly happy with the Papilio as my only binocular for what we use them for. The eye relief is quite comfortable with or without glasses and it has zero tendency to black-out while looking at the periphery. It also has a wide sweet spot. The small size and light weight are great. Where this thing completely rules is viewing small items close up, it's much like having a hand held stereo microscope that works at a distance! It is the absolutely perfect tool for looking at butterflies, dragonflies, all sorts of bugs and flower blooms, and things like lighted mineral sample displays at museums and such. It is an amazing piece of kit and in IMO, in the very top echelon of "bang for the buck". I will probably have to buy another so we can share them during family outings to our city's zoo and walk in live butterfly display. IMO the 6.5x version is the better choice due to less shaking, brighter view and wider field. But that is just my preference and others like the 8.5x a little better. I do wish they made it with an objective cover, though slipping it in the included belt-loop case suffices. I also wish the case was a bit larger so the bino would fit in the case while the eye-cups are fully extended.

excellent for museum and out-door follow/bugs watching. It give much more unexpected details, for example to watch oil painting in museum. 6.5 is also good for birds watching. It's also very light and easy to operate.

Superb clarity

Das Pentax Papilio II 8.5x21 ist gut verarbeitet, sehr klein, leicht, sehr handlich und über den ganzen Betrachtungsbereich, von sehr nah (50 cm) bis unendlich, nicht nur in Anbetracht des für ein gutes Fernglas geringen Preises, unglaublich scharf, verzeichnungsfrei und auch hell, was mich angesichts des 21 mm Objektivdurchmessers verwundert hat. Die Vergrößerung von 8.5 kann ich gut halten, ohne zu wackeln, sodass sich auch bei der Verwendung dieses Glases im Nahbereich wunderbare Bilder ergeben. Die Pentax Papilio-Serie besteht aus zwei Modellen, die wahlweise eine 6,5- oder 8,5-fache Vergrößerung bieten. Bei beiden handelt es sich um umgekehrte Porro-Prismen-Kompaktmodelle mit demselben, robusten Gehäuse und 21-mm-Objektivlinsen. Das Alleinstellungsmerkmal des Papilio, das es so besonders macht und woher auch sein Name stammt (Papilio kennzeichnet eine Schmetterlingsgattung), ist seine unglaublich kurze Naheinstellgrenze von nur 50 cm, was es zu einem idealen Instrument zur Beobachtung von Gegenständen aus nächster Nähe macht, einschließlich Schmetterlingen natürlich. Das sieht im Verbund mit dem an einen Science-Fiction-Film erinnernden Design wirklich gut aus. Die Oberfläche hat aber leider auch die Angewohnheit, Staub anzuziehen. Schade ist, dass das Papilio nicht wasserdicht ist. Ein nicht vollständig versiegeltes Fernglas hat den Nachteil, dass Staub und andere kleine Partikel in das Gerät gelangen können und auf Dauer die Sicht beeinträchtigen können. Also bei Nichtgebrauch besser im mitgelieferten Case vor Staub geschützt aufbewahren. Die Naheinstellgrenze eines typischen Fernglases wird hauptsächlich durch den Abstand zwischen den Objektivlinsen begrenzt. Dies liegt daran, dass es bei sehr geringen Entfernungen zu einer Fehlausrichtung des linken und rechten Bildfelds kommt, da nahegelegene Objekte eine größere Parallaxe haben als weiter entfernte Objekte, wenn sie aus unterschiedlichen Positionen, in diesem Fall den beiden Objektivlinsen, betrachtet werden. Um dieses Problem zu lösen und die minimale Fokusentfernung zu verringern, verwendet Pentax beim Papilio ein ausgeklügeltes System, bei dem die Objektivlinsen auf Schienen platziert werden, die nicht parallel zueinander sind. Wenn Sie also das Rad drehen, um auf ein nahegelegenes Objekt zu fokussieren, bewegen sich die Linsen entlang der Fassungen von Ihren Augen weg, aber gleichzeitig kommen sie einander näher. Positiv zu vermerken ist, dass dies zusammen mit dem extrem leichtgängigen Mechanismus die Feinabstimmung des Fokus für ein 100 % scharfes Bild zum Kinderspiel macht und viel einfacher durchzuführen ist, als bei vielen anderen Fokussierungsmechanismen. Das Papilio lässt sich meines Erachtens sehr gut bedienen, halten und scharf stellen. Wer möchte, kann ein Stativ anflanschen. Die Augenmuscheln sind, ebenso, wie die Dioptrien, einstellbar. Es gäbe noch viel zu schreiben zu diesem Pentax Papilio, es ist klein, leicht, mit einer sehr guten Qualität, hellem Bild und gesegnet mit dieser extrem kurzen Naheinstellgrenze, die es völlig unique auf dem Fernglasmarkt in dieser Preisrange und Größe macht. Ein tolles und wirklich empfehlenswertes Fernglas. Man könnte meinen, ich wäre Mitarbeiter bei Pentax, aber das ist nicht der Fall. Ich habe dieses Fernglas zum regulären Preis bei Amazon gekauft und bin einfach davon begeistert, weil es so ganz anders ist, als alle anderen mir bekannten Ferngläser. Man kann es in jede Tasche stecken, es ist sehr leicht (trotzdem robust und gut verarbeitet), es hat eine ausgezeichnete optische Qualität und man kann eben schon Dinge ab 50 cm Abstand in toller Qualität beobachten. Verglichen mit anderen hochwertigen Ferngläsern, ist es zudem sehr, sehr preiswert. Vollste Empfehlung
