Will house sparrows be attracted to this feeder? it is super cute but I don't want those bully birds at my feeder.
Does this bird feeder keep rain from ruining the seed?
Is this the same as the no-no mushroom feeder which has red rood with white spots as I notice white spots on this roof also.
Will this feeder hold raw sunflower seeds (ones without the shell)? Thanks

Pricey for what you get. There are better feeders out there.

There are better feeders out there. I bought this because there were so many great reviews and the visual effect is different than most. With that being said, here's my reasoning for only 3 stars:1) The quality is okay, metal may be better than plastic for a while, but I'm not sure if this will rust or not down the road. I found that the squirrels had knocked it off the tree and taken the top off (there are only 3 very thin metal lips on the top of the bottom portion that slide into a groove on the top).2) The size of the feeder was much smaller than I had anticipated due to the size of the bird shown with the feeder. Cardinals and Bluejays dwarf the feeder.3) The spacing on the bottom for the birds to get the seeds through is difficult. I found the squirrels are more challenged with this than the birds.4) There is no area for the birds to "land" to grab seeds (if they could...I used sunflower seeds as recommended), so I bought a dowel and cut two 12" lengths and slid through the mesh in a "+" fashion so the birds would have some place to sit on. However, the squirrels chewed through the wooden dowels so they are gone. The birds were initially flying at the feeder and grabbing onto the mesh but couldn't comfortably grab any seeds with their wings flapping, so they left and went to my other feeders. The squirrels are the only ones getting the seeds, they like the challenge.Bottom line: Pretty pricey for something that doesn't seem to attract the birds but does create a challenge for the squirrels.

Cute, Fuctional but not durable....

I used several different seeds and seed mixes in this feeder. The primary seed used was a mix to attract chickadees, nuthatches and woodpeckers. It contained a mixture of different sized sunflower seeds (shelled, black and stripped) and small nuts and nut pieces. I even chopped up suet and placed it in with the other seed at times. While all of these birds and others regularly visited this feeder, squirrels were a problem.Initially the squirrels would hang upside down and fish out what they could from the feeder. Occasionally they would manage to twist the top off the bottom of the feeder. As squirrels started to dismantle the feeder more often, I ended up drilling a hole in the top and inserting a pin to prevent the bottom from twisting off of the top while the pin was in place. This helped keep the squirrels from taking it apart but eventually they just chewed through the wire mesh. I don't expect it to be too much longer before the squirrel damage prevents it from holding seed. While I loved this feeder because it attracted a wide range of birds with the seed mix I used and it was attractive, it needs to be improved. On the top of my improvement list is thicker\stronger mesh to prevent squirrels from being able to chew through it and a locking mechanism to prevent squirrels from taking it apart. For the price I paid ($17.99), I expected it to be more durable and more squirrel-proof. As cute and functional as it is, it's just not durable enough to endure the wrath of squirrels.

Black oilers, peanuts and suet and millet do not work.

I tried it with small black oilers and peanuts, they were too big for the holes. The suet peanuts became a big glop and had to be washed out. Millet and tiny pieces of bird food just ran out. Than I got shelled sunflower seeds. I have five feeders but this one is almost too much of a good thing, It is the bird's favorite. I have golf finches, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers one delightful bird after another. I am currently going through one whole feeder a day. With five bird feeders, I have a continual battle with squirrels. (I do enjoy watching their little minds trying to figure out how to get the bird seed.) This bird feeder is on a shepherds hook with a squirrel baffle 3/4 of the way up. I had to make sure there were no close branches. Now I have no problem with squirrels.

1. A Perfect and Fun Gift Idea for this Summer

I was looking for a gift for my daughter and this come up during my Amazon search, my first reaction was this is an awesome idea because we have a big backyard with two trees and a playground so this fits perfect to keep a fun environment as always want to. I begin hanging the mushroom in a pole that I have used for flowerpot and was a difficult for bird to see it because it heights 36 Inches so I move the feeder to one branch of my trees and it works perfectly for birds, I do not have a squirrel problem, so I don’t know if the anti-squirrel feature is good or not, but what I definitely could say is the mesh looks strong and resistant so I feel safe about this potential problem. Regarding the food, I’ve been using what is recommended by the seller, black oil sunflower seeds and avoid small seeds spilling because the feeder can’t hold smaller seeds or cracked seeds. My daughter loves it and clinging birds too. I have seen finches and woodpeckers there are plenty of them in my area, and once I saw a cardinal. So I consider this purchase a very good deal for me and my daughter, so it’s highly recommended.

my most popular feeder

I bought this feeder over two years ago and getting ready to add another because one is not enough any more. Chickadees and house finches love it, also see some nuthatches on it. The volume of birds increased a lot after I pushed a skinny dowel rod through the bottom giving it a perch on each side. Recently I had to add another going in the opposite direction. I still have birds fighting over it. I use exclusively shelled sunflower seeds. A few fall through when I am filling it, but I have not had any problems. As far as squirrels and chipmunks, I've had very few feeders that they couldn't get to, including allegedly squirrel proof ones. I just grease the pole of my hook so they're unable to climb it. It's held up perfectly. Its easy to fill, I leave the top hanging and untwist the bottom. Easy filling is probably my number one critera in any of my feeders, and I've had no problems.

Cute feeder with lots of visitors.

It's easy to screw of the lid and refill. There are regulars that visit, usually pretty small birds. I have an indoor only cat and she loves watching it. The one tricky part is filling the feeder, if the seeds are small enough you will spill a bunch before the base has enough seeds that wont fall through. Once the initial fall out is done it doesn't spill out more. Just make sure you are filling it up outside.

Perfect

When I first got this, the birds seemed unsure, but I left it up and after five days of tentatively inspecting it, the birds started using it. It doesn’t stop the starlings, however because of the mesh, they can’t go through it like a dose of salts anymore, this ensures the smaller birds get to eat plenty too. I use the large suet pellets which the birds love and they stay in really well…be warned it holds a lot, but it lasts a while even with the starlings….very happy with it

It’s OK

I put peanuts in mine and although it’s sturdy, the diamonds are a little too small for peanuts, but too big for sunflower hearts

Good value for money

This is well made, sturdy, easy to fill. The only trouble is, the birds are totally ignoring it, maybe not cold enough yet.

Birds love it

Easy to assemble and the birds seem to love it. I’d love the same for seeds
