Works great, extra protection against cuts
I've experimented a little with either using or not using this cream before lathering up. My conclusions are for using a straight razor: 1. If you are brand new to shaving, this cream probably won't stop you from cutting yourself as you learn. 2. If you are ok at shaving but not an expert (where I am), this cream will help reduce your cuts. I cut myself about once a week now, and it's not visible by the time I get to work. Without the cream I cut myself every two to three shaves. 3. If you are a shaving pro that wouldn't cut yourself anyway, then you don't need this cream to prevent cuts. However, you might use it as part of your skin care regimen. Overall, I like this cream. The scent (tea tree) matches the other Proraso sensitive skin products, like their soap and after shave lotion. The scent isn't intense so you can go ahead and use whatever cologne and deodorant that you like, no worries about the scents clashing. A tiny bit will cover your entire face, so this jar will last a while- I'm a month into mine and I have used hardly any. This is one of the few sensitive skin formulations that makes my skin feel good with no burning. I like it a lot.

Did I really just give MYSELF this close of a shave?
I usually don't write reviews. I base this one on all the other positive reviews. A few months ago I purchased the Art of Shaving's starter kit. I was using a Gillette Fusion. I was impressed with the shave I received using Pre-Shave, Shaving Cream and an after shave. I would usually just use whatever cheap gel I could get and be happy. I began to become more and more interested in getting "The Perfect Shave." Research led me to the purchase of a DE and some blades. Well, this was interesting and a new skill to learn but I quickly figured out the technique. The problem with the DE and The Art of Shaving products was the build up of the cream in between the blades. This quickly led to irration and for lack of a better word, discomfort. More research pointed me to Proraso Shaving Soap. WHOAAA!!! This is a completely different experience. This is an amazing shave. I was still using the AoS (Art of Shaving) for pre and post shaving. Reading more everyone was saying you get the best shave using Proraso's Pre and their after shave. Okay, compared to the price of AoS I will give Proraso a shot. I received both the Pre and After Shave today (A day after ordering) and quickly went to give all three products a try. Well, I'm done! I can't stop touching my face, it is so smooth. I am amazed that I, myself, gave myself such a close and irration free shave. I will not be using the AoS products again. The Proraso products smell great (not over powering) and they allow the DE to easily glid across my face without getting clogged up with cream. If you have never tried the Proraso products, don't wait, order now. I found the perfect products for shaving and I thank every single one of the other Amazon product reviews for introducing me to Proraso. I will not be switching from this point forward. I really never thought I would be so ecstatic and impressed by a shaving product.

An essential part of my shaving ritual
I think any man who's found his way here cares about the shaving ritual just as much (if not more so) than the results. Honestly, these days a disposable razor cartridge, though more expensive than a more traditional shave with a double sided safety razor, does the job just fine, with no more than a splash of water. When I travel, I leave my full shaving kit at home, pack a Gillette Fusion, and don't bother with shaving cream when I'm at the hotel. It doesn't cut up my face, it's not as close a shave, but it's a perfectly serviceable and very quick method of keeping the hairs on my face appropriately short. The blades even have some lotion built in now. I imagine electric razors are pretty good these days too. What attracted me to an older style wet shave was the ritual, the meditation. When you stand in front of a sink and spend more than the absolutely necessary amount of time maintaining your beard hairs, it's a quiet time to think, do something traditional, and frankly indulge yourself a bit in a classy, manly way. You save money in the long run, certainly, and you do get a closer shave, but the time you spend doing it has other benefits as well. It's a time when you can slow down, take your time to do something right, reward yourself with a luxury you've earned. I frequently think about my grandfathers shaving in much the same way. Often I just think about things I wouldn't have time for otherwise. The ritual is a great way to center oneself at the start of the day before things get busy. I could shave in less than a minute from start to finish, but I choose not to when I'm at home. Taking time to shave more traditionally, more carefully, it absolutely worth it most days. Proraso has a well-deserved reputation for its shaving soap. I use it, I love it, it's the only soap I use. Paired with a silvertip badger brush, it produces the best lather I've ever seen, and the best shave possible. The Italians know shaving, and those green tubs of Proraso shaving soap are iconic. It does take time to get the brush and soap ready, however. I'm sure I don't need to tell you guys, shaving this way is best not rushed, and each step needs to be followed with the proper care and attention. While that's going on, however, there is another aspect of the shaving ritual that should be followed, and that is the preparation of the face to be shaved. It's good to wet the face of course, and the best time to shave is right after a shower, while the hairs and skin are moist and supple. I would postulate that another step can be done to achieve an even better shave. That step, is the product you are considering buying right now. Proraso claims that the combination of ingredients in this pre-shave cream will make the skin and hairs softer and make your shave easier. I can't contradict those claims. I have found that since I began using this product several years ago, I've cut myself less. I can't say for certain if it's the stubble offering less resistance to the blade, the skin being healthier and less likely to be damaged, or simply the slickness of the cream under the shaving soap helping the blade glide more easily. Perhaps it's all three. I can tell you it has a lovely cooling effect on the skin, and the scent is, as many have reviewed, quite pleasant. My girlfriend loves it, and who am I to argue with her wanting to put her face near mine? As suggested, I put the cream on my face immediately after a shower, or after wetting my face if I'm shaving at some other time of day. I then let it sit, while I get the rest of my ritual set up. By the time the soap is ready, I've got plenty of great lather in my brush, and everything else in place, the pre-shave cream has really done its work, soaked into the skin and hairs, and I can apply the shaving soap confidently knowing I'm going to have a great shave. After shaving, I clean up, apply my alum block, and generally don't find many if any cuts. I use an aftershave balm just to keep the skin healthy until my next time shaving, but I always like to start with this stuff here. The whole process does take a while, but if you're wondering if it's worth it, adding a pre-shave cream, for me the answer is a definite yes. I wouldn't say I have particularly sensitive skin, but with the dry air where I live, especially in winter, I try to take care of it as best I can. I've noticed my forehead, which I obviously don't shave, and don't use this product on, does tend to get irritated by the dry winter air more readily than the skin I run a razor across most days, and I think the combination of this product and my aftershave balm are responsible. The jar does last a while, so if you just want to try it out first, pick up a single jar and buy another when you start getting low, but it'll be a while.

Works well and lasts a long time. Comes in glass jar. Contains green tea and oatmeal.
05/21/2020 update: Rating reduced as recent product received in unacceptable condition. I won't be purchasing this Proraso Pre-shave cream again. The jar recently received arrived in a bent Proraso box with frayed edges on the top and bottom and loose cardboard flaps. The jar itself was not even screwed on tightly. With no seal, a loose jar lid, and the condition of the box, the product looked old and as if it had been a sample in a store. Ugh! This is unacceptable. We're not sure that it's clean, so it probably won't be used, but due to Covid19 I'm not going to bring it in for a return. Had this been the first time receiving this product I would have rated it with 1 star rather than 4 stars, because it doesn't matter how good the cream is, if it looks unsafe to use. The Proraso Pre-Shave Cream for sensitive skin arrived from Amazon fast and in perfect condition. My son, who has a heavy stubble and sensitive skin, likes it. He had previously (without success) used several other products and several types of electric and disposable razors trying to prevent chaffing and red bumps on his face. The Proraso works well for him, so it’s the only brand that he now uses. My husband also likes it, reporting that it leaves his skin feeling smooth, and without irritation. He does smell the menthol, but says that it doesn’t bother him, and that he likes the invigorating tingle he feels after using it. He is retired and alternates between shaving daily and every other day (whichever he chooses). The first jar lasted him 4 months. The container is glass. Product ingredients include green tea and oatmeal and glycerin. To use, you apply a small amount (about the size of a pea, or a little more if you like) to damp skin, and then (without washing it off) shave as you normally would do (using shaving cream or soap).

Works for better shaves.
Great stuff. Like the scent. Helps with close shaves.

Hydrates and conditions the skin prior to shaving.
For anyone that does wet shaving, a pre-shave cream is an essential step. This brand is my favorite and this particular version is the one I use the most. Pre-shave creams perform several function to make shaving easier, and getting a closer shave. My routine is as follows. Wet your face with warm almost hot water. I use a facecloth and hold it against my skin for about a minute, rewetting it frequently to keep the water hot against my skin. Apply the cream in a circular motion to ensure all the hairs are fully coated.. I then let it sit on my face while I prepare the wet shave soap. Doing so softens and hydrates the skin, allowing you to stretch it with the other hand enabling you to actually shave the hairs below skin level. After applying the shave soap a double edge razor glides across the skin mowing off the stubble and providing a nick free shave.

Love this stuff
I shave my head at least once a week, and have to use something to avoid any issues with irritation and razor burn. This stuff is great. It helps my razor to glide along very easily, as well as it helps to soften the hairs to make them easier to cut.

Order of operations
I've gotten razor burn since I started shaving. This pre-shave, which you put on FIRST - before your shaving cream or other moisturizer combined with a DE handle and razor has almost completely eliminated my irritation. It worked so well I bought it for my buddies who also struggle with post shave bumps and redness. As a bonus it smells quite nice and refreshing.
