Review Despite being billed as an add-on pack, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Rogue Spear: Black Thorn does actually work as a standalone PC game. And that's good news, for this is the latest in the genre of so-called soldier sims, where you lead a group of troops into various circumstances to save the day. It's a good one, at that. Despite initial appearances, covert operations are very much at the top of the agenda here, as the missions involve sneaking around, quietly taking out bad guys without disturbing the others, and rescuing hostages intact. As with the previous Rainbow Six releases, the basic rule that one bullet can end your mission stands here too--you really will get no benefit from charging in all guns blazing, and that makes things satisfyingly challenging. The ultimate effect is to make the game incredibly tense, and really quite difficult, especially for those new to the genre. The controls take a while to grasp, although once you're in the swing of ordering fellow troops whilst keeping yourself alive, you can't help but be gripped. There's plenty to do and, frankly, you need to do the lot if you're going to succeed: very often, a mission will be made or broken in the planning stages, even before your soldiers have set foot in hostile territory. In truth, this pack doesn't add an enormous amount to the original game, but the very fact that it does offer more of the same is sure to satiate the franchise's growing genre of fans. And with sky-high production values and gripping gameplay still top of the agenda, we can only hope for plenty more in the series in years to come. --Simon Brew -- .co.uk See more

Not as good as I expected, but still satisfying.
When I first heard about "Black Thorn" I'll admit I was pretty excited, especially after hearing so many good predictions. Buying the game when it came out was on the top of my list, and sure enough that is what I did. Well now I'm sure you are just dying to know my opinion aren't you? :O) I'll begin with the negative points, first off the single player missions are not incredibly challenging despite a few brain teasing moments. It took me less than a week to knock off all of it's nine missions, if I had more time to myself it might of been a lot shorter. Also, it's thirty dollar price tag is a little steep, even if it is a stand alone mission pack. On the plus side of things, the nine missions this game provides are in some very impressive environments both size wise and graphical wise. Not only that, most of these missions prove themselves to have a high replayablity factor in both normal and special (terrorist hunt, lone wolf etc.) modes. Some new weapons have been introduced for all you single player lovers out there, including the impressive 7.62mm SSG3000 SR Sniper Rifle and the 5.7mm P90 SMG sub machine gun which is a personal favorite of mine. Multi-player fans will love some of the new weapons that have been added just for them such as the 5.56mm M82 AR assault rifle and the impressive 9mm SPP Pistol. The storyline is not so bad itself either and was pretty well thought out, but don't worry I won't give it away. So while this game is a little pricey, any Rainbow fan can't be without this overall impressive mission pack.

Good way to relax and have fun.
I really like this game as it's classic Tom Clancy format. I only wish the variety of weapons had been tweaked a little more in the grenade department and a few more handguns and rifles such as the XM-8, Svd, and maybe even AK type rifles for use in the single player aspect of the game. But hey, I understand that it's impossible to have it all. The A.I. of the terrorists seems surprisingly challenging on Elite difficulty. All in all, it's a nice way to relax after a long day at school or the office.

Is this really by red storm!?
I own every rainbow six game. I am so so so disappointed, the textures in the game were old. Details were left out big time, I expected this to be the best on account of it being the newest, and probobly the last add on to rogue spear. And I know my guns big time, red storm paid no attention to making the guns real like. Basicly this was a last attempt to make more money, but it was worth it because it expanded th multiplayer possiblilities. I say if you like playing it online, go for it. But if you want something more than just covert ops, dont get it. I dont want to knock red storm down completely, but i play operation flashpoint. If you've played it, you would know what im talking about.

OK, and then what?
I am a seasoned RS (Rainbow Six/ Rogue Spear) player. I have bought every game in the series. Including this one. I didn't even download the Demo because I was expecting it to be brilliant. I must say, I Love ther RS series. (...) I could have made similar maps (the only real thing that changed) myself. Basically, if you know and love the RS series, wait until the price drops to get the maps. If this is your first introduction into the RS series. BUY IT NOW, then go buy the older ones if you liked it.

One Last Gasp
More of the same, nuthin' new really. A few new weapons, no new unis, 9 new maps. Really, the Rogue Spear franchise has grown tired and this is a last gasp effort to pull in some green before Ghost Recon leaves Rogue Spear in the dust.

Boring...
This game continues with the great graphics that Red Storm has been consitant with, HOWEVER, I managed to finish this game in about 2 hours. The only challenge was the many "beat the clock" type scenarios.BUT, if you never played any of the Rainbow Six collection, this is a must to get you started.Get it and start wacking TANGO's left and right!
