Review: 3rd Grade Boy Approved - Fun book series written for 3rd-5th grade students in mind. Short and simple with clear, concise content and humor sprinkled in the pages. These are not in-depth reviews looking at controversial issues or politically charged view points but age appropriate, fact based biographies. We especially enjoy this one and have liked many of the other "Who Was..." books. My 3rd grade boy enjoyed and recommends this book. Review: Great Builder Of American Pride - This book is just right for kids in the 1st grade through 5th or 6th. At this age, they haven't heard much about the Revolution or our Founding Fathers, so George is a great book to start with. There are lots of drawings and the reading is easy. The story is even better and books of this reading level will get the facts straight and at the same time encourage our kids to read on. Nice job, I would buy the entire series and read them to my kids at night, at least as often as I read Harry Potter to them. I like reading about how America looked back in the day and exactly how folks spent their time. Washington and his early days were spent as a privileged citizen. He became a very good horseman and was well respected. His early years as a military leader for the colony were not great. But he did show signs as a leader if not an expert military tactician. He was victorious 3 out of 9 major confrontations with the British. So his war record was not exactly good except for one major accomplishments- he outlasted the British and accepted their surrender at Yorktown. My 1st and 2nd graders were very disappointed that he didn't cut down the cherry tree, so I now leave that out of my presentations. The main thing they gain from this book is that America was all but "one and done" when it came to waging war and gaining their independence. But through trust and outstanding leadership, not only did Washington end the war victoriously, but he was elected our first president. And had he not attended the writing of our constitution and led the representatives, I doubt seriously that the 13 colonies, now states would have ever agreed to become the United States of America back in 1787. Washington was our leader. The people trusted him and followed his lead through many harrowing experiences. They put their lives and fortunes on the line. And without him, our way of life today might be very different from the freedom we now enjoy. Every kid needs to know this story. George Washingtom was never a father in the literal sense of the word, but he was our father in a much larger sense. He literally fathered what we now proudly call these United States of America. And he had a lot of help from his friends. It is the material that heroes are made from. And it is a well deserved distinction.

Great information
I got this book for my 8 year old and we love it. It has some good illustrations and plenty of good information. It answered his questions about George Washington.

Fun book full of facts for kids!
My 6 year old son is learning about George Washington in school, so he came home and wanted to learn more about him. After doing some research I found (through reviews) that this is a great book for kids. I ordered it on my Kindle and my son (so far) loves it. We are only on Chapter 3, but he already learned some stuff he didn't know. My son reads at a 3rd grade reading level so he does pretty good reading it on his own. I would definitely recommend this for the curious kid!

Much better heroes than those offered today
I use these before we visit a location (Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Boston, Gettysburg, Mount Vernon, Lexington and Concord) so my son has some reference of the location and significance first. I also coordinate them with the BSA Historical Trails and NPS trails. Several years ago, my son (at age 9) had a full blown conversation with the Park Rangers at Ellis Island about the immigration process there, which showed his understanding of the events and the significance of the place. In addition, he was able to find a connection to Einstein because of his learning disabilities/abilities and Neil Armstrong, who was a Boy Scout as well. Much better heroes than those offered today. These are fun, short, easy, and a good supplement to what they don't really learn in school.

Fascinating intro to Washington's life and times
This is a great book in a great series. This little biography whets your appetite for learning more about George Washington and his contributions to American history - and I really enjoyed the illustrations, maps and sidebars with background information.

The “who was” books are really great, and this one is no exception. It’s a great way to teach children about people from history, as it is written in a clear, informative and fun way and the books aren’t too long or boring so children don’t lose interest. We use this in our home school.
