Already Ready: Nurturing Writers in Preschool and Kindergarten

The book, Already Ready, is essentially a "how to" book on developing writers in Pre-K. It is a book about teaching writing, but not in the sense that you teach children to form letters or spell words-- it focuses on teaching composition. It uses a project-style approach by using bookmaking as an ongoing class project which helps children feel valued as writers. Your students will feel like real authors who write real books.I highly recommend this book to Pre-K teachers. While you could implement bookmaking on your own, this book will give you more insight into a child's process of becoming an author and creator of books, and will help you understand how to evaluate their efforts and progress. The book gives many ideas for supporting children as writers and for teaching children about the elements of books (e.g. authors, illustrators, genre, etc.)

I have only gotten through the first 20 pages or so, and so far it has been good. The writing style is easy to read and understand when they explain problems, etc. I do think this will be a good book for me as a parent of two 6 year old boys, setting the expectation level and understand how they learn and express themselves with a pen and paper.

Great prompts for everyday writing

The holy grail of writers workshop books. If you are an early years or kindergarten teacher and you haven't read this book yet then make sure you do. It will change the way you look at writing, the way you "teach" writing and the expectations you have of children for "writing".Highly highly recommended.

This book is GREAT! I'm a 4K teacher, and I read this book during my master's program. It is the easiest book that I read during my program as well as the most applicable to my everyday teaching. It provides practical, relevant information and many examples of student work. LOVED IT!

I love this one for PreK. For school aged children I recommend No More "I'm Done" By Jennifer Jacobson.
