Love math start books!
A good book to read to set the stage for a lesson on animals or ordinal numbers. I can't wait to use it in my classroom.

Ordinal Numbers
Story: Each dog does a trick. Uses the words first, second, third, and fourth. No real plot line.Math wise, the book does introduce ordinal numbers. but its at a really low level think preschool and under. If a child in is in a home or classroom where there is an interactive calendar and everyday they learn the date, then those kids are naturally learning the names of ordinal numbers (ex today is July 1st). BUT, the kids may still may have confusion that those ordinal numbers impl a specific order of events like first step, second step, etc. That is where this book fits in. It shows how those numbers imply a set order of events. After reading the book, put up a schedule where you do this first then that second etc, or demo something with steps and have the kids then do the steps themselves to make something. You could also have kids put events in order of what happens first, second etc. Good examples are baking a cake and reading Cake Day, a butterflies life cycle, craft project with steps, etc.

1st review:)
Great book! It is definitely for prek-2nd grade readers. Puts the lesson of ordinal numbers in an easy text for young readers to understand. Definitely recommend it for your math literature library!

They are simply fantastic! Mr
We have most of the MathStart books. They are simply fantastic! Mr. Murphy has a knack for simplifying the concept for little kids and the illustrations are very striking. We read a new one every week and read it once a day (an idea borrowed from a friend). The books also have some activities that go with the concept.
