10 years going strong
10 years later it's still very reliable. I was able to time my generator use to specifically keep my chest freezer at a good temperature, which considering i can only run one thing on my generator (it being a tiny portable one) this was very helpful. Nice to have the reassurance, I'll be getting a second of this unit (the electric one) one for my fridge soon. It does require i bring a light or use the flash on my camera to view it in the power page but that's okay by me since it means the batteries on it last a very long time reducing worry of it maybe not doing its job when needed.

the only way to know if you're storing food properly...
this unit is well built and fulfills it's purpose perfectly. it is easy to read and has idiot-proof markings of proper cold and frozen food storage temperatures. having worked in food service within the military, i can't overstate how important a thermometer is in your cold storage areas. how else do you know you're food is being stored correctly? you don't...unless you have thermometers. i found that the temp in my refrigerator was not where it should be...it was too warm by almost 10 degrees! after turning the setting up a notch, everything was A-OK. without a thermometer, i would never have known and would have had to rely on the recommended manufacturer settings for the refrigerator (which is a bad idea). even if your fridge has a built-in digital thermometer, you should still have a thermometer that lives in there, as all electronic devices eventually fail or give false readings. these alcohol based units are also far more accurate and reliable than the dial-type ones, which invariably fail within a short amount of time. this one is built to be pretty tough, as thermometers get dropped all the time in the industry, and perhaps even at home, depending upon where and how you decide to mount it. this is a quality NSF approved thermometer and well worth the money.

Cord too short; some other quibbles; See recommended alternative.
You're going to be much happier if you buy AcuRite 00986 Refrigerator/Freezer Wireless Digital Thermometer See my review of that. Original review of this cheaper unit follows: I had a refrigerator failure which I fixed with parts from Amazon ... see my review at Whirlpool Part Number 2197381: Evaporator Fan Motor or Whirlpool Part Number 2321799: Bi-Metal, Defrost . So I wanted a way to monitor the actual temperatures going forward. My various cooking/dial thermometers just didn't do the trick and were hard to read. And you have to open the box to read the thermometer which seems silly because it lets out cold air and alters the very temperature you're trying to measure. First thought: it works well, registers temperatures to a tenth of a degree and I'm glad I bought it and I'd recommend it especially as compared to dial thermometers. But it's not perfect. The first complaint is that the 1 meter (39") cord is just too short. A 2 meter cord would have been much better for only a few cents more. Secondly, the warning goes off at 45 degrees (F).... the FDA recommends that your refrigerator temp be 34-40 degrees so 45 is pretty warm and it's not adjustable. Thirdly it sure would make sense if the cord was a flat "ribbon" type rather than having a round cross-section because many people are going to want to - or have to - run the cord under the door seal. (See other reviews for more on this topic). Finally, on a positive note: the included suction cup for the sensor head allows for reading the temperature from the middle of the box and keeps the sensor out of the way of the contents of the refrigerator and helps keep the cord from flopping around.

Works as described and is reasonably accurate
This reads freezer temperature within a couple degrees of a mechanical thermometer I trust - so seems plenty accurate. I keep my freezer at -5 deg F. This alarms when temperature rises to +15 deg F. The alarm is loud enough to be heard in the same room but not much further. The suction cup wouldn't attach to the textured interior of my freezer - but I just let it hang down inside. The alarm only sounds for 5 seconds every minute. I'd prefer that it alarm constantly since my freezer is in the basement and someone is there only for short periods. That said I'm happy with this unit.

NOT RETURNABLE!!! BEWARE!!!
It's a shame I can't return these. Beware of fine print! I became too comfortable with Amazon's return policies. They are difficult to hang on a shelf. I received 1 of the 4 with a different clip. None fit my freezer shelves or fridge. Very disappointing.
