An Extremely Underrated, Underappreciated Epic Work of Fantasy
I cannot recommend this series enough. If you are a fan of fantasy works, or you simply enjoy reading for the sake of reading, the Osten Ard series and it's sequel series, The Last King of Osten Ard, is for you.The characters are believable and real in a way not seen often in a book filled with fantasy fare, yet they fit in seamlessly with the world Tad Williams has created. They range from endearing to infuriating, from weak and foolishly desperate to strong and self-assured. There are characters from all walks of life and ethnicities, with motives complex yet timeless. You will laugh and cry with these characters. The plot begins as a Hero's Journey but slowly becomes something more. You will go in thinking you can predict the storyline, but you will be pleasantly surprised with the twists it offers. The writing is quality, with a strikingly good balance between it's description and it's pacing. Williams makes good and clever use of metaphors, and the way he writes such themes as childhood, fatherhood, and loss, it seems clear he must have experienced these things or at least reflected on them to have written them so convincingly. I have never read a youth's perspective as convincing as Simonds' or, in the later series, Lillia. Likewise, the twists he writes are believable precisely because he writes them so subtly and so well. This series has in my opinion surpassed A Song of Ice and Fire and even my original favorite series, The Wheel of Time, due to the quality of it's writing and character building. I am surprised this series is not more well-known among fantasy enthusiasts and cannot possibly recommend it enough. Please give this series a try!

Reread Time!
I read the original trilogy when they came out (my first edition hardbacks are buried in storage), and I recently noticed Williams' had returned to the land of Osten Ard. So rather than trying to find them in storage, or trying to find them through our local library (I'm getting old now, and need to downsize, not add more books to my personal library-g), and considering copies are scarce in the statewide system, I decided I'd just buy some new paperbacks and ultimately donate them to the borough library when I've finished the reread. I'd feel more guilty about rereading these days, but with staying-at-home time on my hands, I've been reading more. And I remember loving them originally. Here's hoping the 'suck fairy' didn't get to them! The copies did arrive in perfect condition, including Witchwood Crown.

Great Series, Great Package!
This is a terrific fantasy series that is expertly written! I read the series first as each book was released. That series was donated to my public library. Now I want to reread it. The books arrived in perfect condition!

so far so good. I'm still on the first book
so far so good. I'm still on the first book. It was slow to start but then got really interesting. The books are small paperback but I think I was spoiled from the last book I read which was much larger
