Big Horn 19053C 3 Pieces 8-Inch Spring Caliper / Divider Set

Inexpensive kit. Not real high quality, but decent. Not something you're going to want to use if you need super precise meausements, but works very well for my purposes.

Each of this set of 3 has been very useful in wood turning projects. Easy to set, with springs strong enough to stay where they’re put. Good tools and at a good price.

These calipers are great, for the price, but needed a bit of cleanup before use. They arrived covered in a heavy oil and in sealed plastic bags, to prevent rust from exposure to uncertain shipping and storage environmental conditions from their country of origin. The country of origin is not marked on the calipers or their primary packaging. They do not appear to be made of stainless steel, so I degreased them and then sprayed them with a "dry" lube -- similar to "Dri-Cote" or "Top-Cote". I use them for woodworking and do not want "wet" oil or grease to contaminate my workpieces or my tool chest. The pointed ends of the inside and outside calipers had substantial sharp burrs -- i.e., the tips were ground but not finished. So, I used a hand-stone to remove the burrs and concluded that these are made from a relatively soft mild carbon steel. The springs appear to be made of a harder grade of appropriately tempered spring steel, and the adjusting screws also appear to be made from a harder steel. With proper care and storage, these instruments should do a fine job for a long time, and are great for their price. I did not rate these at five stars due to the amount of cleanup and deburring that I had to do. If I did not already have a hand-stone, degreaser and dry-lube in my shop, I would have rated these at three stars.

Quality instruments that work as expected

If you need to measure the inside, outside or length, these are nice to have. Perhaps not the most precise tool, but for ruff comparison at a good price point they are a good choice.

This set was purchased strictly for use on a wood lathe and related work. While it will do what I need, I want to caution you if you are even thinking this is a precision tool. It is not at all suited for professionaL use by Engineers, Machinists, Mechanics, Architects, or other professional tradesmen. For a home or one man wood shop they will suffice to do most jobs, but don't expect tight precision. These are listed as 8". On the set received the divider is 8 15/16", the outside caliper is 7 5/8", and the inside caliper is 8 5/8". None of the legs are perfectlt aligned, so there is a slight tilt when laid on a steel rule. I had to spend about 15 minutes clearing out screw thread shavings from inside the "barrel washers" in order to get these 3 tools to open and close properly. Two of the tools alreeady had damaged threads on the adjusting screw. There is no provision made for locking the tools in position, so beware of movement. Note also that the points aree all very sharp, usually good for transfer marking, but if using on a lathe you will need to round the contact points evenly an polish them to avoid marring the wood surface. Do they work? Yes for my current usage. Are they a good value? Yes for my current needs. YMMV, so keep in mind that I also use precision drafting tools which cost hundreds of dollars forty years ago. I am a little spoiled in my expectations on occasion, so I'm giving these the 3rd star because I actually wasn't surprised at the lower spec tools I received. RECOMMENDED WITH CAVEATS for non-critical work only.

I'm using mine while working with a wood lathe so the ends being a little sharp on the outside and inside calipers isn't ideal but that's nothing a little filing cant fix. They hold position well even with me pulling them out of my pocket and dropping them back in many times while working on stuff. Having owned these for a couple of years now I can say I've had no problems with rust except some tiny bits on the blackened parts. An that's with them stored in my apron pocket often filled with wood shavings from green wood so they get some fair moisture exposure. I see other reviews saying that theirs got a little rust so it can't be stainless but remember even stainless steel will rust if its exposed to overly rough environments or the surface gets too roughed up so your mileage may vary depending on what you are doing with them. Overall I'm very happy with them and might buy a second set so I can leave some set to more of my chuck sizes without having to re-dial them in.

I haven't had these long, but they seem to be good quality. I'm happy with them, especially for the price.

I like the quality, versatility, and functionality of the dimensional measurement caliper, it's a good product at a good price, works great to measure into small spaces, and is well-built. It's exactly as shown.
