UPDATED with tale of woeI burned about a half dozen CD-R with this unit, and maybe a dozen DVD for data backups. I also used it to read about 50 CD-R data backups I had burned in years past with a different burner. It started failing to read CD-R but I assumed it was a problem with the old optical media. I start experimenting with CD-ROMs and CD-DA; it won't read/write CD media at all anymore although DVD media works.I contacted the seller about an RMA. They advised me to contact Lite-On.So I contacted Lite-on, who said get the RMA from the seller.Ok. I told the seller, who asked to see Lite-On's response, which I'd already provided in the email. :-\Then the seller asked for the serial number, which I'd already provided in email. :-( I don't like this pattern.Seller says they are in the process of procuring an RMA. Ok. I will name names if this blows up, but if they come through I will put it all behind me.Because this can take a while I figured I'd order another one and keep any RMA replacement as a spare. I noticed there was a refurb available from a different seller, and I've had great experience with refurbs in the past. Seller (M-Wave) shipped very fast. IMO there is no way this drive was refurbed, or even inspected. The door wouldn't open. Weird. No grinding or hanging, just a gentle whir. I opened the drawer manually with the paperclip trick and saw the drawer drive belt was loose in the drive (see pic). I was able to retrieve it and install it on the pulleys with a pick. Joy!No, despair. The drive clacks and won't stay closed whether or not a disc is present. It sounds like maybe the drive head is not lifting into place correctly. I put in for a replacement but apparently Prime only does refunds. Fine.I gave up on this model drive and just bought a Samsung instead:Samsung 24x SATA DVD+RW DVD-Writer Internal Optical Drive (SH-224FB/BSBE)===== Original review =====A great drive, just what the insiders have come to expect from Lite-On. Funny name, fantastic burners.

Simple device that works
Used this in a new build. Works as expected and has not been a problem.

Lacking Necessary Parts
I haven't tested it yet, but from other reviewers I'm going to assume it works. We will see. My only issue that made it lose a star is that it didn't even come with the required SATA cables much less the housing screws. Disappointed on that as I had to spend extra money to get the cable and screws i need to install it.

It works
I tried using a dozen CD drives on a new Windows 11 build and this is the only drive that was plug and play and worked flawlessly

works with Windows 10
I installed this in my new computer with Windows 10. It automatically installed itself and then prompted me to download a video player from the app store.

Bare drive, works, but needs f/w update for media compatibility it seems.
Bought the bare drive. I don't know if this is a Windows 10 thing or not, but at first the drive seemed to not be recognized properly (BIOS saw it, Device Manager saw it, nothing in File Explorer).. However, when I discovered it was assigned a drive letter in Disk Management, I decided to try putting a disc in the drive and like magic it suddenly popped up in File Explorer. So, that was 1 mystery solved. Now, I bought it to burn a bunch of ISOs to DVD. Good news, the drive works with the 16x Philips DVD-R discs I bought. Bad news, it does not like the TDK DVD+R DL discs I bought and most of the ISOs are too big to fit on 4.7 GB. I know the discs are not defective, as they work fine in the LG Blu-Ray burner on my other PC. What seemed to be called for was a firmware update, but like many PC makers, LIte-On now has you download a "smart" play program to check for firmware updates. According to it, there is no newer firmware update at this time. So, I replaced an old Lite-On drive with this drive. Problem with the old DVD burner? If it didn't have a disc in it, you then had to use a paperclip to open the disc tray. if you keep a disc in it, it opens fine; there's a drive on my work PC like that, too. Old drive burned to the DL discs I fine, though. Old drive was an old Lite-On parallel IDE drive, not a SATA drive. SO, it just feels like I swapped one functionality for another. Anyway, not a bad drive for the price, just not a great, wonderful, exceptional drive either. And I hope they (Lite-On) release some new firmware for media compatibility soon!! At this point, I am almost tempted to put the old parallel burner back in the computer.

Lite-On is truly old reliable
Yes, I still use CDs and DVDs in my chassis. I picked this one because I remember almost every off-the-shelf computer from the late 1990s to 2010s had a Lite-On CD or DVD drive. No trouble, still reliable as always.
