gets sucked into a computer game and fights the evil digital ...
This was a beast! It's broken into five sections and each one tells the story of Ash's shenanigans with the Necronomicon, deadites, Evil Ash and time travel. This has been a treat to read! It is full of time travel, Ash goobering up his one task to destroy the book over and over, fighting and endless deadite army, and multiple Evil Ashes. He saves the girl, loses the girl, ends up in the wrong time, travels backwards and forwards in time, gets sucked into a computer game and fights the evil digital version of himself and deadite soldiers. He travels back to the cabin where it all started, picks up [and loses] new allies, destroys the book on multiple occasions and still the Necronomicon finds a way back into his life every time. The stories are amazing and the artwork is is phenomenal. Part of what took me so long to finish it was me staring at the art. Each section is done by different writers and illustrators, so that makes it that much more eye-grabbing noticing the differences in writing and art styles. It's a must read for anyone who is a fan of Ash Williams and the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness series.

Great Book; Abominable Production Quality
The only thing keeping me from giving this book five stars is the production quality. The entire thing is glued together- Yes, glued. My first copy I read fell apart completely and Amazon had to send me a new one. I'm completely careful with my books, so these books will fall apart if not handled extremely carefully. Other than that, the book is a great collection of Dynamite's Army of Darkness series. This first book contains:"Army of Darkness Movie Adaptation""Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes""Army of Darkness: Shop Till You Drop Dead""Army of Darkness: Ash vs. Re-Animator""Army of Darkness: Old School" (The ending is a prelude to "Army of Darkness: Ash vs. the Classic Monsters.")& "Tales of the Army of Darkness"

Repetition mares otherwise fun comic
Dynamite comics has released another Omnibus, this one collecting the Army of Darkness adaptation and continued comic book story into a single Trade Paperback. Whenever you dive into an Omnibus you will discover how well a story originally told via episodic issues holds up when assembled into a single graphic novel narrative. You have to forgive the earliest issues of any collected work, for it is typical to dedicate a few pages at the start of each issue recapping what has happened before for all those jumping in a little late. But usually, after the fourth "chapter" or so, the recapping fades to a panel or two and the story can flow. The risk taken when making an Omnibus is that readers may discover a story told in small doses was better than one told in a single collection. This is the case with Army of Darkness.Volume One opens up with a wonderfully drawn adaptation of the film Army of Darkness, itself a sequel to the two "Evil Dead Films", all directed by Sam Raimi and starring Bruce Campbell as Ash, in the role that made him famous. The art of the John Bolton is never equaled again in the collection, and the decision to stick to the original script's ending and not the final one seen in the film made it even more a compelling read. The problems begin with the completely original material, which is based off the film's ending and not the adaptation's. Thus you see Ash in a futuristic post-apocalyptic setting on one page, and back is his own time working as S-Mart on the next, without explanation. The downgrade in art also clues you in on a change you better get used to, as the adaptation had a great sense of movement and scale while the remainder of the Omnibus struggles with flow and uses an intentional distorted scale that often is jarring and fails to evoke the humor intended. The quality of the story is affected in the original material as well. The decision to revisit themes from the film adnausium detracts from the overall tale, how many times can we take a repeat of the "little Ashes" from the broken mirror gag? There is a definite dedication to imitating the one-liners the Ash character is known for, but the ratio is so high that repetition is required to sustain the pace. The complete change of character from supporting cast from the film, so clearly presented in the opening chapters of the Omnibius, likewise makes one think the whole target audience age was severely lowered once original material was produced. The best thing the rest of the Omnibus has going for it is a very accurate tone for Ash, you can hear Bruce Campbell's voice in your head if you are familiar with the film series, and a "thank God" decision deep into the book to elect to attach other famed horror theme characters into the narrative, in this case a Reanimator and Army Of Darkness blend. Though the final chapters of the collection still remain difficult to adore, it did take the entire concept somewhere more original and had me thinking about actually taking a look at Volume 2, when Ash finds himself in conflict with the Universal Studios rack of monsters, Dracula, Wolfman and Frankenstein. In the end, the best way to have read this series was probably an issue at a time, weeks, if not months, apart. If you delve into the Omnibus, at least in volume one, be ready to be tired of the merry-go-round about halfway in.

Wow!
I am so pleased with this. It is way bigger/thicker than I thought it would be. (Cough, cough...That's what she said!) The pictures are beautiful, the pages are glossy and thick, and the artwork is incredible. You won't be able to put this down and will be very amused. This is a great one, can't wait for the next.
