Great Helpful Book
I ordered this from an Amazon seller, which I hardly ever do, but the savings was so great I felt it was worth a shot. The shipment came at the time he said it would and it was in the best shape, I could not tell it was a used book. Thanks to Amazon, for their willingness to allow other sellers to access their site, and thanks to the person who sent me this great book!! I ordered this book because my husband and I both had parents with Diabetes. We want to be healier and make good food choices. There is so much confusion regarding blood sugar levels, and what foods to eat. This book is great, it truly explains the interactions of food, the tips about taking a little vinegar with your meals, or eating dill pickles with your sandwiches are fantastic, who knew that these things could help lower blood sugar levels? I love the way this book is large enough to see what you're reading, you can leave it open on the counter in your kitchen, when you need to double check something, the size of this book helps the navigation of the book much easier. I suggest getting this book to anyone who needs help with getting your family all eating the same types of foods and making healthy choices, because the truth is, whether you have diabetes in your family or not, if you aren't eating healthy you will become diabetic or worst of all make your kids diabetic!!! Trust me, after watching my mom suffer though countless operations because of diabetes, I want to fight against it any way I can! A friend suggested this book to me, and I have been well pleased with all the book has to offer.

Much useful, handy, convenient information for meal planning for lowering blood sugar still useful today in August 2014
The perfect book for planning a healthy low blood sugar diet, even now in 2014. The book was published in 2007 but contains much useful information about what to eat and how much and in what proportions for keeping blood sugar low and why that is important. Contains useful charts and diagrams on the best things to eat in food groups like protein, fat, carbohydrate, acid foods, and so on. Has a usefule chart on low GL foods to high. Lists about 52 or 54 best foods for lowering blood sugar and for daily eating and has a page on each packed with information from scientific studies as of 2007 and how much of it to eat daily and an index of recipes in the book with page numbers using tha food. In back are sample diets for 7 days for 1400, 1800, 2200 calorie plans and text about how to pick your level. The key to the book is the Magic Food eating plan which consists of about 7 tips to remember each day when eating/planning meals. This book is being carried in August 2014 in some of Martin's stores.

The Un-Diet that could change your life . . .
It was time for a change and my Aunt casually suggested this BOOK THAT CHANGED OUR LIVES! There's nothing really mysterious about these foods - and it isn't anything we haven't heard in some form before, but here it is in easy to read and follow format. Simply by immersing ourselves in this straightforward high-value whole-foods philosophy, my husband and I have each lost over 45 lbs! Blood pressure, total cholesterol and triglyceride levels are lower! Our chance of developing Diabetes or metabolic syndrome keeps dropping, and we have no intention of ever reverting to our old habits. We have started gifting this book to family and friends.Everything happens for a reason IMHO, and as we became more knowledgeable, my 72 yr old mother was unexpectedly diagnosed as Diabetic. Adhering to this diet along with an oral medication has brought her fasting blood sugar from a whopping 305 down to average below 120 in under a month!I would recommend this to anyone with blood sugar issues. I would also recommend it to anyone interested in lowering cholesterol, losing weight, protecting their heart and prolonging an active lifestyle. It isn't just for diabetics - it is a healthy, balanced approach to nutrition that can be used by anyone!

This book is FANTASTIC
Am in the process of reading this book and have jumped about a bit and read this and that throughout the entire book. Chock-full of info, this book explains succinctly about foods and what foods do and which foods are better for blood sugar control and limiting inflammation in your body. It also has menus and recipes to help one plan meals. The suggestions to implement a life-changing food style are gradually approached and doable, with encouragement and knowledge that, hey, you can eat junk if you want, just watch proportions and if you do, well, do and get back on the band wagon because, yeah, we are all fallible. The book discusses medical trials and research, too. Being a newly-diagnosed diabetic, this book really is helping me identify foods with less carbs and learning factual info about which foods are better than others and what foods can be eaten which are better substitutes; it also has a section which deals with restaurant foods! Learning a lot from this enjoyably-written book, including some British-English phrases and words. Definitely recommend.

Healthy eating is here to stay
This is a fabulous book, except this edition goes on about superprocessed “healthy” margarines and low fat yoghurt and mozzarella, all as far as I understand seriously discredited. I guess this is indicative of the dietary advice - low fat high carb - which has produced the obesity/diabetes epidemic. Otherwise there is excellent information on healthy eating, plus some great recipes. Also, this edition is seriously cheaper than the new one and is fantastic value for money. It is also beautifully presented and a pleasure to read. All in all, this is a book to which you can refer whenever you want ideas and it is packed with good advice (I just ignore the low fat highly processed food aspect). The good far outweighs the less good, and I look forward to enjoying a healthier lifestyle in future.

Sweet Nothing
If you're a 'foodie' and you've already got 'Food' Books on your book shelf, don't waste your time and money buying this book as there is no new information to get. It's a bit disappointing because as a Reader's Digest, I really wanted it to be informative, but the books I already have are 'more' informative. The Information on Sweet Potatoes does not highlight that there are two types of Sweet Potato and what the differences are between the two - one Sweet Potato has orange flesh, the other has a white flesh - but which is better to regulate 'Blood Sugar' this Reader's Digest Magic Foods Hardback Book mentions nothing. However, it does mention Yams. There is a Contents Page and an Index for you to tailer your studies to suit your personal needs.Thank You!

Indispensible - clear and practical advice
This is my second copy as my first one was lost and I couldn't manage without it! Clear and easily understood information on eating a healthy diet which is also practical and sustainable. Gives 7 simple rules, followed by information on a number of different foods, their health advantages and how to use them. Not only beneficial for blood sugar - also gives information on heart health, weight loss, reducing cancer risk etc. Recipes are useful and all I have tried have been successful.

Just Excellent
This arrived 3 days ago, since when I've been glued to it....so comprehensive and without doubt the very best book on the subject I've read (and that's quite a few - there's a strong history of diabetes in my family and I'm doing my utmost to break the link...got to 61 years old all-clear so far, fingers crossed). This has helped me to refine my diet to the point where it's pretty damned good I reckon...off to Waitrose shortly to stock up on oatcakes, barley bread etc....shall feel like a proper posh Waitrose shopper at last!!

This book is for people who are at risk of diabetes and diabetics alike
Excellent book. It gives advise and guidance on how to change your diet from the quick sugar fixes that we currently eat to foods that will reduce the rate we absorb the sugars in everyday food. It describes the sugar rollercoaster we are on and helps us to control it. Great recipes as well as how to use foods with a low glycaemic load to reduce the effects of the bad foods we like and to make our food more healthy. It helps to educate as to good quality food for diabetics and suggests ways we can change our diet so as not to be insulin resistant - glucose intolerant - and for those at risk to hopefully stop them from actually becoming diabetic.
