Battlefields of the Civil War Map

One can't complain that it's so comprehensive, and a useful overview, but you may need a magnifier to read the text.

This review is from: Civil War Sites in Virginia: A Tour Guide (Paperback)I am applying the review to the other books I purchased as the comments are meant for all of them:I purchased a number of books on touring Civil War sites as we are planning trips to do so this year and next, during the final sesquicentennial dates. It's difficult to know which will be the "best" resources and I suspect that many if not all will compliment the others. The sites books have information concisely packaged. The Road Trip Books bring an orientation to the scenes as they exist today (as well as historical perspective) and the Day-By Day books allow another method of quick reference.I needed the maps as well to remain oriented. With all of them, I can find not only the immediate point of interest, but also the context into which the events will fit. If I had to select just one or two to concentrate upon, I would be hard pressed to decide. I am in the process of learning as much of the information as will stick. It may seem like a lot of duplicative effort, but repetition and evolving context are what helps me learn and I want to learn, to appreciate what I will be viewing.I also have purchased Shelby Foote's anthology to re-read as I had misplaced those volumes purchased when I was a kid. After seeing him in Ken Burn's The Civil War, I remembered how witty and enjoyable he is. All of this is available on Amazon

Just like an old road map. Put out by National Geographic . Two sided needed something to pin point where the many battles took place as many current maps would not include some of these older towns. Have maps of battles but where these were precisely within a state I did not know for sure. So if you have an interest in the battles of the civil war this is an inexpensive means to put them all together . Especially in Virginia where many battle fields were on top or right next to other previous battle fields. Even though in small print dates and info cover the map.

Overall, it will be a helpful map for my road trip. Details of battles is a bit hard to read, as the print is small and light against the map background. It is printed on a waterproof paper, but with limited use (twice) it has already torn along a fold line. Not sure how long it will hold up. Full map on one side, detailed battles on reverse. I'll make use of it and may have to keep scotch tape handy.

This is a great map, I very much recommend this to all!!! All schools should give this out to all students for U.S. History classes now!!! Harold Cooper 12/07/2021

Great map for enthusiasts!

A good map with lots of information and locations, but the paper started tearing on the first time I tried to unfold. Should be plastic coated.

it whetted my appetite to travel some more to visit the various battlefields that I have not visited yet. Then I would be better prepared to critique the book and it summaries of the battlefields. The battlefields I have visited I used as a review source and I found the maps to be accurate. I found that theuse of the book, research on the net, and a US Map to see how each site is laid out in relation to other sites makes for a very enjoyable, less frustrating quest to obtain all the knowledge you would like to derive fromyour journey.RICHARD E. This map is a very useful companion to Shelby Foote's "The Civil War- a Narrative". I recommend reading the book at a desk with the continental side of this map spread out to one side; it's a quick and enjoyable way to place a given battle.The reverse side's illustrations of individual conflicts gives an interesting second take on many of the text's individual sketch maps.Besides, reading about any war, you've just got to have a good map beside you. And possibly a kepi and swagger stick. You know, for ambience.

This map is correctly detailed for the period in question is clear and concise. The only negative is that back to back printing of this map is inconvenient for my purpose, so I must buy another copy or photo graph and reprint one side.

This was a present but I'm told it has good detail and is a nice quality. A good present for a reenactor who likes American civil war.
