Hi Robert, When VZ-1 is connected to computers via its USB cord, it is recognized as a USB document camera. It can be used as a webcam but it can also be used as a regular document camera. You can download the Presenter software from our website and adjust other advanced camera features through the software. Q: Would this be suitable for scanning books and magazines with the ability to save the images to pc If so could it capture an A3 size document?

To capture A3 size document you will need to boost the cam higher as the arm does not extend tall enough to fully cover A3 size. You can save the image files to PC when connected to PC via USB, saving the image is not an option when going directly to a projector in VGA mode.

Q: does it come with a case? or is there a case to buy separate?

no case im afraid, plus nowhere to store any connecting cables. i use a little black zipper case for latter (pencil case),
