Scattered Poems (City Lights Pocket Poets)

Kerouac wrote some pretty bad poems, but he also wrote some darn good ones. Any collection of his poetry will contain the good and bad. Every poet has good stuff and bad stuff, and you have to write the bad stuff to get to the good stuff. Kerouac was a highly original poet, influenced by jazz improvisation. He plays with words and rhyme in ways no poet does. Scattered Poems is indeed a scattered collection with some original poems and poems from his collections that weren't published at the time but are now available in print. My favorite in the book is a biographical poem on the great French poet Rimbaud. He hits, in a poetic way, the high points of his life, and then draws an interesting comment on life. If your not a trained reader of poetry, some of his work will go by you, but with Kerouac there's always an effort to reach all readers in some of his work. He was not a literary man.

This is definitely a good book of jack Kerouacs poems one of a few I saw and was looking at oringally trying to figure out what would I best suited in my poetry collection definitely some great poems well worth it

This is a joy.thought I had lost this forever while moving in the eighties.and this is not easy to find..publisher "city lights"didn't last long but published most of the works of beat generation poets and writers.Kerouac and Ginsberg being two.you really have to love this kind of "Jazz" poetry.ment to be read aloud,to get the "musical" sound of the words of his works.this book is not easy to find but if you do..hang on!

The 'Beat' personified. Very Kerouac. Funny, how your perspective changes as the years fly by. Somehow, Jack's 'facs' have different depth decades later than they did "back then".

It is exactly what I needed, but it was packaged very poorly! I am surprised it did not fall out of the box while it was being sent to me.

Awesome pocket book! It's great to have on hand when you have a few extra minutes here and there, like when you're waiting for an appointment. Great content too, especially if you're already a Kerouac fan.

Kerouac's best selection of poetry. A must for Beat geeks. A good way in to more taxing pieces of the generation.Read in conjunction with Ginsberg's HOWL.

Great travel size book, to keep in your handbag, or in the bathroom!

Tbh I’d never heard of this guy till I was scrolling along on Amazon looking for Poets to follow.What stood out was he’s attractivenessIt’s an ok book but he’s not Bukowski !!

Don't get me wrong, I love Kerouac the prose artist, and some of his novels ('On the Road' and 'The Dharma Bums') are great. And there is much poetry in his prose, but as for these 'poems'...well I'd say they are mostly self-indulgent childish noodlings of very little depth or interest to the reader. Shouldn't have been published.
