Great summer read for my fourth grader. He loved it and we were able to read together and discuss and then of course follow up with the movie. He hasn't been able to put it down since it arrived earlier this week. It is nice to be able to motivate him to read in the summer with the prospect of a good story and a movie. The story is great for teaching about and encouraging discussions about emotions, sacrifice, and humanity. The plot story develops well and adequately introduces and builds the charter and the story. It was also nice for a young reader that the portions of the story that are memories are printed in italics in order to separate and cue to young reader that it is in fact a recollection of the past. My son has really enjoyed reading this novel.

It is so admirable that dogs can work as diligently as humans to protect and serve their country. Dog are amazing creatures with exceptional abilities and the loyalty they have for their masters are unparalleled. This book was wonderful, sad and uplifting all at once. A must read!!

I gave this to a friend who used to have a German Shepard named Max, and he still cries whenever he speaks about him. He loved this book and after reading it, he went to see the movie. He said the movie was great, but the book had even more in it.

This is a good book for young dog lovers of either sex. I loved the fact that it was the girl who was the "dog whisperer". The age group for which the book is intended will surely love it. As an adult, I did find it more than a little predictable and the problems solved a bit too easily and quickly. Will youngsters feel that way? Probably not. Is it a book I would teach? No, but I would recommend it - especially to the less enthusiastic readers.

Great book for your younger readers, fourth grade on up. Combines military family hardship and the love of dogs. If I hadn't been a dog lover before, I would have been after this story. Makes me want to see the movie.

This was a good story, that yanked at my heart-string on a few occasions. I read this book, because I saw about half of the movie at the drive-in theater before some idiot drove into a telephone pole, causing the electricity in the entire neighborhood to go out, thus ending the night at the drive-in!! I was really getting into the movie, so I decided to read the book. I'm glad I did, it was a good read.

I never thought I'd BE reading a Military Book, but MAXX's Story called to ME... I've heard that the. military used Dog's in battle. But I didn't know that they could suffer from PTSD as well. this story is Great for all ages.. AND I highly recommend you READ it if YOU have ever wondered what goes on in a soldiers mind after the war is over..But just remember when they return home their battle IS just Beginning because they are trying TO remember WHO they were before becoming a SOLDIER !!

I read this book because my granddaughter is reading it too. I cried and laughed and thoroughly loved it!! You are a great author Jennifer!!

What a beautiful written book just loved it! Maybe it's because I'm a softie! And maybe it's because I love my dog so much but whatever it is I loved this book it had me in tears for nearly every chapter! Brilliant story! And a great tribute to those soldiers and there loyal dogs who have lost there lives protecting us!

Bought for a friend. She loves Animal stories fact and fiction, so I'm sure she'll enjoy this!

Superb story. The DVD was excellent, required a tissue!
