Giro Me2 Infant Bike Helmet

Safe, Cute, and Built to Last—Perfect First Helmet for Little Riders The Giro Me2 was the first helmet I bought for my toddler, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It’s lightweight, easy to adjust, and feels far more substantial than many cheaper toddler helmets. The dial fit system in the back is intuitive—you can snug it up perfectly in seconds as your child grows. My son started wearing it around 1 year old, and it still fit comfortably past age 3 with plenty of room for adjustment. The built-in visor and bug net are thoughtful touches. The visor helps keep sun out of the eyes during stroller rides or on a trike, and the bug net keeps out bees or small debris. The buckle is designed to prevent pinching, and while my son squirmed the first couple of times, he quickly got used to wearing it. The bright color and fun design (ours was “Highlight Yellow”) made it easy to spot and encouraged him to keep it on. Ventilation is surprisingly good for such a small helmet, and even on warm days he stayed cool. The shell feels solid, and after several falls and scrapes, it still looks nearly new—no cracks, just light scuffs. Bottom line: a durable, comfortable, and genuinely child-friendly helmet that adjusts as your little one grows. If you’re buying your toddler’s first bike helmet, the Giro Me2 is a proven classic that blends safety, comfort, and cheerful design.

Giro labels this an "infant" helmet, but our 2½ year old is well into toddlerhood and his yellow "chicks" Me2 is growing right along with him. We initially purchased this prior to his 1st birthday, in preparation for rides in the Burley D'Lite Trailer . At that young age and small size, it was a bit of a problem to use this helmet with any sort of seat, since the protruding rear of the helmet "pushes forward" the kid's head, making for an uncomfortable ride experience. So we relaxed on the helmet usage in the trailer for a while, but he began wearing it full time on his Kettler Trike , and later his balance bike. He also wears it while strapped into the child seat mounted to my Xtracycle Free Radical , though we had the same "pushing forward" interference problem in that application as we did with the Burley trailer. The designs are cute (well, you be the judge), and most important to me, the headband fit adjustment is easy: just a great big knob in the back that takes no effort at all to turn, and has proven to be solidly designed all along -- not a single problem. What I'm not a fan of is the strap adjustment. Just like with adult helmets, the design uses two straps that wind different paths through the helmet, need to come together just under the ear, and clip not too tight but not too loose under the chin. Of course, it's *much* easier to make these adjustments with a willing participant, and even then it's not always simple. With a youngster -- well, let me just say that we opted for a "good" but not a perfect, i.e. snug & by-the-book proper fit. We'll revisit that as he begins riding a pedal bike on his own. The chin clip is another thing to watch for: it has a decent "pinch resistant" design, but we've had a couple of crying sessions either installing or removing this helmet. I've never been convinced an actual pinch occurred -- maybe just the *click* surprised him? Whatever the case, I always try to use caution when working the clip so that I don't accidentally nick him or choke him. In a world full of Space Shuttle, firefighter, construction hardhat and cow-head bike helmets, this Me2 design is refreshingly simple, compact, cute, and light. And it has proven durable enough that I think we'll be able to pass it down to our youngest in the coming year. Definitely a recommended buy. (Update 8/25/11) -- A quick note that we bought a Giro Rodeo Youth Bike Helmet for the 2½ year old, in order to pass the Me2 down to his younger brother. We took head measurements, and found the older boy was only half way through the Me2's adjustment range. So without a doubt, this helmet appears to be a very easy decision for the 1 to 3 age range.

We bought this for our thirteen month old, and it fits him perfectly. To give you an idea of size, at his doctor's appointment last month, his head had an 18.5 inch circumference (74th percentile). I'd say he could have a slightly smaller head and it would still fit okay. There's also plenty of room for him to grow; I'm guessing it'll fit him until he's at least two and a half, maybe three years old. I'm actually a little jealous of this helmet - it's way nicer than mine. It's really easy to adjust, so we loosen it every time we take it off (using the wheel in the back), and tighten it to make sure it fits snugly whenever we put it on. The straps are also easy to adjust, but he can pull them away from his chin pretty easily because he's still a little pudgy. I'm not sure any helmet would be better, though. He wasn't a huge fan of it the first time he wore it, but by the second, he got used it. Now he likes to fidget with the air vents and feel the texture change between the plastic and styrofoam. It also looks really cute on him. The colors are a lot more vibrant than I expected from the photos, and the sun visor is the perfect size. It also looks big enough to protect his nose the next time he face plants by jumping over the handlebars of his trike. We're really happy with this purchase, and are glad his little noggin is going to be kept safe.

I read a lot of reviews before making my purchase. If you are like me, look no further. This helmet is built to last and grow with your child. My son was 10 months old when I purchased it. There is so much space for growth. However, with that being said even though it is secure, when looking at it from a distance, it appears to be big because of the about of growth that it allows for. The helmet is easy to adjust in order to get a secure fit, breathable, and appears to be comfortable (my son doesn’t try to take it off). My son wears sunglasses with the helmet, but the visor does reduce the amount of sun going into his eyes. Great product, built to last.
