Fantastic Subwoofer, and yes it really makes a difference!
Best subwoofer I've ever used. If you're wondering whether (i) a subwoofer matters to your home studio, or (ii) whether this particular subwoofer will make a HUGE difference to your home studio, the answer is YES!!!!! Great power, nice tight sound, no unnatural booms, exceptionally solid construction, excellent crossover and retains imaging and detail beautifully Not only does it give you incredible bass performance, keeping the low end out of your near field monitors (using the low cut control) allows them to perform much better in the frequency range where they perform best. I've tried it in a large studio and in a small project studio I use for mixing and mastering and it sounds incredible in both. I've paired it with Genelecs, mackies and a pair of B&W monitors (don't laugh, they sound great and have a very natural flat frequency response) and it was everything I could have ever hoped for. I upgraded from another brand that had a larger front-facing driver because I needed a slightly smaller form factor for the project studio, and was skeptical as to whether it was powerful enough paired with a 200/side watt BGW reference amp or whether I was wasting a bit of money because I could have gotten a lot of subs that cost less, and there is absolutely no question that it was worth every penny. I have to keep it down at about 4 even with the BGW clocked at 10. If you can afford it, buy it. If not, save up for it. One last lesson learned: I used a very direct signal path this time going direct from my universal audio interface into the HS8 and am extremely pleased by how much clearer the sound is and how much detail is retained as opposed to running it into a Mackie Big Knob first (as much as I like the Big Knob, the fewer things you put in your signal path the better).

Sounds so clear and distinct that I can now hear “the room” verses the sound from the speakers.
Update:This subwoofer is awesome for listening to my Keytar in the studio.Keytar: https://amzn.to/3UPBHpRIt really brings out all the sounds this incredible instrument can make. Being part guitar, part keyboard and part synthesizer it can produce an amazing range of sounds from guitar to bass to horns to keys to full blown FX The subwoofer really brings out the lows! Much more so than the Yamaha HS8 studio monitors alone. A great addition to the studio.First review:After returning three other 10” studio monitor subs that were defective. I decided to WAY up my game a go with this 8” Yamaha. I bought the HS8S with Amazon as the seller and “ships from”No issues at all with the sub. Clearly a high quality speaker. I ordered a pair of Yamaha HS8i 8” studio monitors and only one arrived. I connected the XLR cables to the one HS8i and left my earlier purchased 8” (other brand) studio monitor speaker connected. The HS8S and HS8i were so sonically clear I could suddenly hear the acoustics of the room distinctly! I could even hear the HS8i breaking in. It was astounding. I had not heard that before these speakers. The other HS8i is on the way but yet to be delivered.Technical things to consider: the heat sink in the back sticks out far enough you cannot use “angle” XLR connectors unless they are the kind that can go 4 direction. Same with the HS8i. Not saying anything against the speaker or heat sink, just something to note if you are placing the speaker in a tight space. The manual is excellent and worth reading the details that matter to you. Like balanced vs unbalanced cables. The build quality is “QUALITY”.Let the speakers break in a bit before deciding about them…Very impressive and would recommend. I might start doing hearing exercises to keep up!

Decent
I actually have two of these subs paired with two HS80M studio monitors. One sub alone outputs decent bass, but I feel the sub is not on par in terms of quality with the HS80M studio monitors. Obviously the sub outputs more bass than the monitors, I am just talking about in terms of bang for the buck, I feel that the monitors are a league above the HS8 sub. I feel like Yamaha means for this sub to be paired with the HS80M/HS8 monitors, or they wouldn't share the moniker. I do not feel that the crossover is great between the sub and the monitor frequencies. The second sub I received has some slight alterations as it is a newer version purchased at a later date than the first. It also sounds different/responds to different frequencies as demonstrated by a frequency test I performed in Ableton, so be aware that not all HS8 subwoofers are the same.Overall, I am glad I have two subs just to balance out the soundstage/directionality of the sound. Prior to this it always sounded like the sound was coming from the upper left of my desk cabinet, whereas after adding the second sub the sound is more centered in the soundstage. The addition of the second sub did not drastically improve sound quality. Any improvement, if there is one, is slight.
