The Shepherd of Hermas

MUST READ FOR EVERYONE
I read the whole thing thanks be to God! It contains lots of wisdom, truth, and light. I recommend that every Christian reads this book.It may be a bit intimidating to read the whole thing for it is super dense with wisdom, but rest assured for you will not regret it one bit for those of you who seek to live a life that is holy and pleasing to God.Also, I recommend that, before reading this at any time, that you pray and ask the Lord to open up your understanding to the Scriptures so that you may discern and perceive what is said in this book. โWe ought to not read Scripture to simply know more but to serve and worship God more truthfully and purely.โ Fear not too much if you are slow in understanding, for Hermas himself could not perceive things immediately and asked lots of questions to the Angel of Repentance, also called the Shepherd, who would then explain everything. But still pray for understanding. After having completely read this book, I would highly suggest that you recommend this book to other Christians who are trying to pursue holiness and upright living and who are true and serious about their walk with the Lord- โto those who have repented and to those who will still repent.โIโm telling you. Literally almost every time I read this book, I felt convicted in my heart and had to constantly keep praying to the Lord to forgive me of my sins. It was just so convicting as the Shepherd would call out sins that I know I am guilty of.Text aside, I truly appreciate the rendering that the editor made to this work. I appreciate that he made the text easier to read and understand to modern English speakers. I can truly tell that he took good care of this text. I also like the fact that he decorated the front cover with a beautiful painting, depicting the Great White Tower, a very important parable of the book.In conclusion, I would recommend this book to everyone who is willing to receive it, and I hope that they will listen to this Chief Officer Angel who is more powerful than Satan himself. I hope that this book will be once again be accepted and taken seriously in the Christian world once again. To God be all the honor, all the glory, all the praise, and all the thanks now and forevermore.Amen.Peace unto all.Sincerely,A Truth SeekerP.S. The Shepherdโs true name is Phanuel, who is set over the repentance and those who hope to inherit eternal life (Enoch 40:9). I would also recommend reading the Book of Enoch w/Book of Giants by Joseph Lumpkin and also the Book of Tobit from the Septuagint/Orthodox Study Bible, Hardcover: Ancient Christianity Speaks to Todayโs World.โ You can surely learn a lot from Godโs angels.

Interesting example of early Christian apocrypha
Like the updated edition but gosh now I'm getting early Christian spam. Curiosity does not equate belief.

Touched my heart.
Reading this book Made me want to be a better person. Not from fear of the consequences (although fear can be a great motivator), but rather better for the sake of being better.

Very much worth a read for any true Christian.
Supposedly this was a document that was known and revered by the earliest Christians within several hundred years after the deaths of the apostles. The book is broken into three parts, and I nearly gave up on it toward the end of the first part in which the author, Hermas, continually has conversations with a lady representing the church. The last few chapters of part one were much more meaningful, though, so kept my interest. The second part of the book conveys 12 commandments for Christians from a shepherd who appears at the home of Hermas one day and reveals himself as the Holy One. This part (Part 2) is very worthwhile for the Christian to read, and I found it most meaningful for me, specifically the commandments against allowing anger, doubt, and grief to hold places in your heart, thus displacing the Holy Spirit who brings peace, assurance, and joy instead.

Should be required reading for Christians
Hermas was a close friend to the Apostle Paul, and had an incredible personal relationship with the Holy Spirit, which is revealed in this writing. One can summarize the book with the simple words of Jesus, "now go and sin no more". This is not watered down Christianity as you may hear being preached today, it's early church history and teaching that was included in many of the early church cannon's of scripture. It doesn't deter from the Bible, it doesn't conflict with the Bible...if anything it only magnifies your Bible and it pulls apart the sticky pages in your Bible that contain the things we'd rather not have preached to us on Sundays. This book will reignite your faith, and will help you search out the things in you that need to be brought to the surface and dealt with so you can finally get free.

Enlightening reading....
This Book was held in high regard for Church Fathers such as St. Irenaeus in the 2nd Century. He considered it to be Scripture. Wisdom and Prophecy are both critical elements of The Faith. There is much application and insight to be learned and contemplated. I appreciate the modern language, and is much easier than reading via phone. God bless you. Definite recommend.
