One way to clean the fan...
This ashtray works really well, I can actually see the smoke getting sucked into the center. You have to rest your cigarette all the way in flat for it to work best, you can't just lay it in the ashtray at an angle. Pick up some extra filters since you will need to replace them often. Smoking less than half a pack a day I end up replacing them at least every two weeks. The fan is quiet enough that I sometimes forget to turn it off. The ashtray is easy to empty and clean, but you will definitely need to come up with a way to clean the fan, since it will eventually get gummed up and covered in tar. It's enclosed in plastic which isn't removable, making it that much harder to clean. A great solution for me was using Oster Kool-Lube Cleaner 14oz which I use for my hair clippers. It cleans and lubricates the fan well and makes it quiet again.

Works but noisy
The air design is spot on and works perfectly. Reduced clouds of idling smoke to zero. Easy to clean since top ashtray part lifts off - dump out - rinse with water and you are good to go. Now for the noise. The fan runs off of two C batteries but I use AA (just stuffed some pieces of foam to hold the smaller batteries in place) and it works perfectly and runs with no problem for a couple of weeks of reg use. The fan drives a squirrelcage fan - not a normal fanblade - and fits pretty tightly into it's design to efficiently pull smoke and push it thru the little charcoal filters. The fan is noisy because of the shape of construction and forcing the fan to work hard to pull the smoke to evacuate. The fan is superglued into it's position so I worked the fan loose with an knife blade. I reseated the fan (clearance is tight) and taped it down with ducktape. I covered all internal airleaks and the fan now runs much smoother and MUCH quieter. No matter what, the fan is not noiseless, but works great. So, just do some minor tweaking if any sound is annoying. This is a worthwhile purchase to vastly reduce idling smoke. The filters ARE required since that's what sucks up the smoke. They are plastic somewhat sturdy rectangular units with some fiber on both sides and activated charcoal in the center. Easy to open and refill with new activated charcoal (available at any pet supply store that sells fish). Two are mounted on opposite sides to get max air outflow.

ABOLUTE WORST PURCHASE EVER
I realize I did not buy the top of the line in smokeless ashtrays, however, it should last longer than two weeks. Actually, it's not even been two full weeks. It eats the batteries (which i purchased from Amazon at the same time}. Two C batteries at a time. I'm on # 7 and 8 in less than two weeks. Fan goes in and out. Gets very loud at times, then calm downs for a few seconds and loud again. Fan is causing some vibration that makes it even louder. It blows little ashes all over the place. Needless to say, I'm not happy with this purchase.

Works Great, But Requires Constant maintenance.
This is my review for "The worlds Best Smokeless Ashtray + Bonus 6 Pack Filters". The product works great out of the box. The sound is not so bad when you first start using it. The ashtray sucks in 100% of the smoke when your cigarette is resting on the tray. The Ashtray part comes off easily for dumping and cleaning. The top dome cap also comes off with ease, which allows you to thoroughly clean the inside of the tray. After about 1-2 weeks of use you will notice the ashtray getting louder and louder. This is due to tar build up on the blades of the fan. Take your batteries out, and use some all purpose cleaner, I use LA's Totally Awesome. It's the best cleaner I've found and it's usually only $1 a bottle at your local Dollar Tree or Dollar Store. Spray it inside the fan area and let it sit about 2 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. Most of the tar will come off instantly and your ashtray will be working like brand new. After cleaning, i let mine dry for about a hour or two, alternatively you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process. The motor is well protected, and cleaning it with water and Awesome doesn't seem to hurt it at all. I would have thought it would short something out, but i give it proper time to dry, as you should. Battery Life: I use AA Eneloop rechargeables with C Cell converter to power mine, but i did use some regular alkaline's when i first got it to see how the battery life is. With Alkaline's its about 30 Hours of use. With AA Eneloop rechargeables, it's about 12-14 hours of use. Filters Life: About 2 weeks or 150 Hours. The ashtray automatically comes with 2 filters, and if you bought the version with the bonus filters, you get 6 more. The replacement filters are EXTREMELY Cheap. You can get a 6 pack of them for $1.57 here on amazon. Overall i'm really impressed with the ashtray. It was a really cheap product, so i don't mind buying 2 or 3 of them as extra's as long as they do the job. I expect it's life to be around 6 months. Don't buy this and think you can use it 12 hours a day, for 2 years and everything will be fine and dandy. In all seriousness it'll last you about a year if you take good care of it. If you don't clean it, i'd expect it would burn up or get so loud you couldnt stand it, in around 4-6 months. Thanks for reading

smokeless ashtray....happy home!
I am, frankly, surprised at negative reviews, especially those claiming its junk! I am further perplexed at number of folk complaining it does nothing for 'exhaled' smoke! It's an ashtray people. What effect are you expecting an ashtray to have on your exhaled smoke? It would truly be a miracle if an ashtray, of any type, could perform the feat of filtering smoke 'in the air'. As for the complaints of noise, yea, a small inexpensive (cheap) product with a fan will generate some sound. We all know we pay more for 'quiet' room fans. To expect an item this small to have some fancy quiet fan would price it out of range for us smokers. I did not expect my 19.00 was going to buy a super quiet system. Same with the 'ash' and 'dirty' complaints. Smoking is a dirty expensive habit. Ask the non smokers around you. Ash is generated. Noxious odors are generated. And an unwatched cigarette, resting in any type of ash tray can fall to floor or table creating burn or fire hazard. I love this product...have bought them over last 5 years. I use mine in tandem with a Smoke Buddy. A product you exhale your smoke into. The ashtray sucks in the smoke from my resting cigarette (extremely well)..Smoke Buddy takes care of exhaled smoke. Voila! My house, my clothes, my hair, etc no longer smells like a stale ash tray! My walls and furnishings have no 'smokers film'...and I (sadly) smoke pack a day. My daughter in law now allows my grand children to stay overnight, as she's less concerned about second hand smoke. My partner & children are thrilled with no more "stinky',smoke smells. I've had a couple duds that broke or stopped working rather quickly, but typically last around 6 months with regular care & cleaning. And yea, they will stink after some usage (again, no surprise really, it's a stinky habit). But until I give it up for good, this product is a lifesaver for me. Please ignore the unrealistic expectations and complaints from reviewers who obviously thought that for a few dollars, evidence of their filthy smoking habit would be 100% eradicated. You can accomplish that simply, in another way....stop smoking! In the meantime, this baby, for a few bucks, a little noise, regular, annoying, conscientious cleaning & maintenanvr, makes the life of a smoker less undesirable to freinds and relatives. Save your clothes, save your home furnishings, save your relationships with this purchase. I did.

Why can't we have nice things?
Why do people keep saying, "It only sucks in the smoke if the cigarette is sitting in the ashtray"? Is that not self-evident? It's a $15, poorly-made, Ronco-quality product that gets nastier than a litterbox, not a magic, home-purification system that wafts the smoke straight from your mouth to never-neverland. You don't need to tell us that it also doesn't clean the drapes and run a sponge over the walls. The ashtray is ugly, unpleasant to use compared to something nice, and probably cost 29 cents to make in Guangzhou. How'd you like to work in that factory? Those people must dream of assembling iPods. It's actually got a hint of art-deco to it, but it's hard to tell if it was intentional, or just the byproduct of making the thing as absolutely cheap as possible. It should reduce your smoke output, unless you're the kind of smoker who never lays the thing down, but it's not very good, and if it doesn't break, it's gonna stink like a goat farm after awhile. If you know of a better one, please shout out. There doesn't seem to be very many options in smokeless ashtrays.

Very Effective
This really cuts down on smoke odor in my home. It doesn't help with my exhale but eliminating the "idle smoke" really adds up. Make sure you get rechargeable batteries since it's really easy to forget it. However, these things really only last about a year... either the fan gets too noisy, or they die, or they just get too stinky and gross no matter how much I clean them. That's fine by me since they're really worth the money.

Yep, shure's General Tso, these funky things are disposable
Whell, my apologies to the Japanese--but these ARE made in China. Fan-motor burn-out in under a year+a-half of no more than 6-xs daily use--and by that time, the internal unit (under the black ashtray itself) is so matted with tar you've gotta either spend no less than 15 minutes detail cleaning with lighter fluid, old toothbrush + cotton swabs too? ...OR just junk it anyway. Appears what happens is the motor itself gets caked (because the filters are AFTER instead of before the vacuum fan where they belong--'ah, ancient Chinese secret! Very clever, no? X) of course, and after working extra hard--and gradually so much the more extremely hard--against the on-going build-up . . . whell, surely you get the cheap, battery-operated 'dust-buster' picture already. & then there's the annoying noise: level of which seems to very from item to item. Out of 3 I've now used over the last 2 years, on average I'd say I have to turn up the t.v. volume by about 10% above normal to hear dialogue clearly, but one of them was maybe 5% louder than that and got even louder as time (+internal parts) wore on. Feeling the warm welcome right back to the ghetto, dear fellow tobacco enthusiasts? Hey, we still treat our corrupt government employees better these days! +There's a FAR greater chance than "1 in 80,000" chance your Federal 'representatives' already took years off your life. Just sayin'. ; ] & YES, that's right, this IS pretty much as good as they get, short of being a resurrected 'middle class' denizen, clearly. So plan on buying replacement ashtrays periodically, as well as filters. OR? "Get rich + DE-regulated quick: vote Republican!" ; )
