This stuff is good enough for Leonard Zinn, so it's good enough for me. It is a lubricating cleaner that doesn't dry out the pivot points on the chain. I clean my chains (road bikes--you might need more drastic methods for muddy dirt bike chains) by applying Chain Shine liberally, letting it sit for 5 or 10 minutes, then wiping it down and blasting it out with an air gun (while shielding the wheels and tires from the resulting spray). After drying overnight, I lube the chain. This results in a very, very clean chain. For daily use, you can do just fine by applying Chain Shine and wiping it off the side plates; it will lubricate the pivot points well enough to get you through until you do a more thorough cleaning and lube.

I prefer the aerosol versions of this sort of product. This doesn't spread over the chain/gears and is less efficient at dissolving grease and goop.
