The book is interesting and intelligently designed.
The book is interesting and intelligently designed. History of advertising is illustrated with very nice and beautiful illustrations that bring us back to her "romantic" era. In this era advertising was not only a means to generate profits, and valued art.

TONS OF FUN!
This book is overflowing with wonderful images. I bought it to use in my collages & it's perfect. There's just about anything you'd want inside this book... farm animals, birds, flowers, fish, transportation, furniture, food, hats, military, music, etc, etc. It is full of bunches of delicious & delightful images!

Interesting illustrations, but a lot of repetition
Lots of cool illustrations, but sometimes a whole page can be filled with the same exact illustration with varying sizes (and they can get really small, like 1 inch--not kidding). So I found the 3,800 illustrations a bit misleading, as maybe a hundred of them or more are repeats. It's definitely not 3,800 unique drawings. A lot of them are really small drawings too. So, eh, it's okay.

The best cuts are on the cover
The best cuts are on the cover. I will not be able to use this for my intended purpose. If you are looking for some amazing flora cuts, this is a great resource.

Interesting art selection, but majority are too small.
I love the huge selection of black and white line drawings from the late nineteenth & early twentieth century. While I love the images in the book, there are two major complaints I have with the book. One, a lot of small images. There are too many images that are only half-inch wide, which are completely useless for any artists. Second, there are a lot of repetitive images. For the book to say 3,800 in the title, I find the repetition of images misleading. I'm not going to count, but I would say a fifth of the images are repeated.Although these images are from 100 years ago and are therefore out of copyright protection in the United States, I understand Dover restricts the use to 10 images per publication or project. I'm fine with the 10 image restriction. I mention this so on one can accuse me of copyright infringement when I say I scan the images for my own projects. So, now, I have a problem with the fact that some images are printed very close to the center part of the book. When I try to scan a page, part of the image that are too close to the center can not be scanned because I can't squish the book flat enough for the scanner to capture it.I gave it three stars because there are also large images. On the Table of Contents, there are 12 sections.1. Plants, Animals, Birds And Insects. This features roses, fruits, vegetables, farming, cows, sheeps, pigs, deer, horses, horseshoes, chickens, rabbits, ducks, roosters, pigeons, fishes, bees, and butterflies.2. Women.3. Children.4. Food and Wine. It has utensils, wine bottles, ham, eggs, bread, grapes, cheese.5. Sports. Biking, rowing, horseback riding, hunting, wrestling, boxing, fencing, running, tennis, sledding, and skiing.6. Music & Dance. Bells, harps, music notes, old-fashioned piano, drums, trumpets, violin, and people dancing.7. Transportation. Bikes, horse carriages, old-fashioned car, railroad train, sailboats, steamboats, and old-fashioned planes.8. Headpieces, Tailpieces, etc. These are decorative borders for frames.9. Architecture. Buildings, bridges, windmill.10. Military. Soldiers standing, on horseback, and shooting.11. Trade cuts. These are images of people working with old-fashioned tools.12. Good and merchandise, Miscellaneous. These are images of fashion clothes, hats and shoes, furniture, table, chairs, windows, sofas, bed frames, mirrors, lantern, buckets, mop, fireplace, basket, trunk, tools, sewing machine, eyes, teeth, circus, clowns, pool table, baby carriage, and more miscellaneous items.

Cheap but classy cuts
Bought this as needed old-fashioned pics of everyday items (teapots, hats, fruit and veg) to post on a website - there's a great selection and my designer was delighted. So much so that she's pinched it. The only disadvantage of the format is that in order to do a really good scan you need to cut the pages out so now it looks a bit bedraggled.

way too small
Actually, it's not just some of the pictures that are tiny, almost ALL of them are.
