For Chord builders, all you'll ever need!
Whoa! This hour long 'tape' is all you'll ever need regarding guitar harmony. His lessons aren't like, "Step 1: Do this; Step 2: do that". Its, "These are your options. this sounds good here, but don't do this here. This is what I (Joe Pass) like to do here. You can substitute this here and that there".You gotta know where your intervals are at though, and how to build chords. It comes with a little chord booklet. It is so small and cheap of a booklet, but worth guitar gold to peek at while Joe Pass is teaching what you what you can do there or there while at the same time running circles around your guitar manhood. Do yourself and your guitar a favor and buy this DVD and support the memory of Joe Pass. It will strengthen and liven and brighten your relationship with your guitar forever! (Must know how to build chords!!!)

The Chord substitutions were excellent. Some good bass walks and basic melody lines are included, and great overall advice about taste, and technique. It would be easy to listen to the whole video and miss some great information. So, don't take it for granted. IMHO, If you listen to, observe, and do EVERYTHING Joe Pass discusses in the video you'll get a lot out of it. That of course includes some things he doesn't elaborate on in detail though, like learning introductions and endings. He mentions it, but doesn't go into detail about intro's and endings. Although some good "lines" are included, I would prefer to have more of those, and more complex ones, and additional chord vamps other than I VI II V. I don't think it's for a beginner, unless they are an adult and feel comfortable with the physicality of playing a guitar. To use this product, have a guitar that's easy to physically play, be able to tune easily, know open and basic barred chords, the layout of the neck, be comfortable playing a scale or two and have an interest in jazz standards. Though I wish it included a bit more, the material covered was quite good.

Finally!
I've bought too many instructional DVDs over the years. This one finally has what I was looking for. If you have a basic knowledge of music theory Joe ( you can call him Joey) will show you how to actually use it. He's great natural teacher. He focuses entirely on the I vi ii V progression in the key of C (C, Amin, Dmin, G7). From there he starts substitutions, which were always a mystery to me. No heavy theory here, mostly: "this sounds right", lots of humor. For example he substitutes from Cmaj7 to Emin7, then to E7, then to Bflat13. With other substitutions for Amin and Dmin he ends up with that chromatic movement that sounds so funky, but I always wondered where it came from. He makes it so simple. The on screen tabs and chord diagrams are just right. I spent 3 hours taking notes and made my own booklet. Pause, or slow motion, and write it down. All the substitutions are clearly diagramed and explained. And all the chords are simple to finger as he says he doesn't like to work too hard. So he greatly simplifies all those confusing voicings. (Throw most of them out!) Then there's a really great section on how to play your scales in a way that's interesting and useful. Then he goes over two very cool running base lines, and explains how to comp with them . (He says the base line is more important than the chords, so he keeps the chords very simple.)The information just flows out from him like music did. He was a truly great teacher, and this DVD is 10 times more useful and enjoyable than any of the 30 others I've seen.

A Good Jazz Instructor
Joe Pass shows his approach to Jazz guitar which in itself is very interesting, but the best part of this instructional DVD are the special features. It includes slow motion close ups of his playing and a chord library.

One of the Best Jazz Guitarists
For those of you unfamiliar with Joe Pass, he is (in my humble opinion) one of the greatest jazz guitar players of all time. If you're not convinced, give a listen to his album "Virtuoso". He plays the guitar like a piano! If you're looking for a book or DVD regarding guitar chord/melody solo-playing, look up Lenny Breau, because in this DVD, Joe focuses on the difficult I-VI-ii-V-I turnaround (that gives even the most seasoned jazz players a headache). He's a natural at teaching, and it's almost guaranteed that you will pick-up at least one, if not more, ideas for this "headache" of a turnaround (I usually either stopped playing over this, or just picked arpeggios of the chords at this point in the music.Even though he is no longer with us, his music will live a long and healthy life!

One of the best guitar vids ever
I think anyone who is serious about enjoying music and not just guitar, should own a copy of this DVD as this gentleman is a true musician, full stop and even if you dont play an instrument this man will make you want to play by the end of this DVD!Mr.Pass's approach to music is simple, almost instinctive yet its so intricate and sophisticated at the same time.I have been playing for over 3 decades and i dont play jazz at all,but of course after a long time noodling i naturally stumble upon chord progressions and scale patterns that i'm not sure what they are or why they work....this DVD has just put it all in place and made it click because this guy is just so organic to his approach...which is just what i needed i guess. Its not for beginners, but even a novice will enjoy the music and might pick up an idea or two,but it will benefit you greatly if you understand the basics of theory and harmony and already have a level of skill no matter what music you play, but it is ultimately a jazz method and a very good one.

Under-exploited
Joe Pass is one of the Greats on the Jazz Guitar (listen to 'Virtuoso' if you doubt it). In this tutorial he exhibits a wonderful rambling style of description but spot-on demonstration. His fantastic style comes across, especially re' substitutions & bass lines. With just a single run-through I learned a lot - even about progressions I'd been doing for years. And I realised the limitations of some techniques I'd practised for those years - e.g. barre chords. So what does the DVD add to Joe's presentation? Chord shapes on screen as he describes & demos them - PAUSE, PRACTISE, PLAY & JOIN IN. The chord corner is a good way of polishing up your ear off-line in learning 'obscure' chords. Slow Motion has its use in discovering how Joe really does do what he does. I could go on.So why not 5 stars? The DVD fails to use one of the major strengths of DVD / VCR - to flip back or forward through material. So you've worked through a short piece & you wnat to review it. Not easy - only by dropping into Chapter X or Exercise Y & working forward. You can't skip through some of Joe's rambling, charming though it is. Worst of all, you can't access Joe's short demo of his brilliance near the start without ploughing through the wordy intro by Hot Licks & Joe's self-conscious intro - until he gets that guitar going. I'd love to inspire myself through watching him or, better still, show others (e.g. my wife!), who do not appreciate Jazz just why Joe is such a Virtuoso.Even so. Worth the money IF you're Intermediate or above.
