Hammons Black Walnut Naturally Bold Flavor
These are Hammons Walnut Naturally Bold Flavor nuts. There are 8 ounces of nuts or .5 pounds. The protein ratio is very good: 7 grams/ounce, same as peanut butter. Taste is great, sort of similar to regular walnut, but with a little wilder taste. Cost is a little high at $16.99, but these are hand harvested by a one family so you’re supporting America agriculture and small business. I live in Berlin CT and these trees grow naturally all over CT. I tried harvesting some, but they all had worms (larvae) from the Black Walnut Husk Fly. I’ve always wanted to try these, but I didn’t know this product existed till now. Size is what you would find in a nut you cracked yourself about .33x.33x.33 inches.

Tasty treat!
I love black walnut over my yogurt! Although they were good and the price was right, they were less robust in flavor than others I’ve had.

Pungent and unusual
I harvested black walnuts in the wild, and I will admit that it's worth the extra price to avoid digging through the black, sticky fruit and crushing the incredibly hard woody exterior. I was also curious about their flavor; I was convinced that I harvested a bad batch of black walnuts because they tasted strange. Well it turns out that black walnuts are supposed to taste weird! It's a mix of bitter tannin, fresh cut grass, and blue cheese. Considering that these are healthier than English Walnuts, and they add some very unique flavors when you mix them in sparingly with other ingredients, I'll continue to use these in my cooking. However, do not try to eat these in large quantities directly from the bag. They do NOT taste like walnuts you'd find in brownies. For the price and the amount of labor required to harvest and process black walnuts, it's an incredible deal. The tar from the black walnut fruit takes hours to remove from your hands.

Fantastic Delicious American Black Walnuts
Other reviewers are complaining about the taste. Obviously, they are thinking they are buying English walnuts. Pity them! These are the "real deal" when it comes to American Black Walnuts! So, if you are wanting black walnuts, these are what you seek! Some reviewers are complaining about the small size of the pieces. As a child I used to harvest these nuts by hand for my mom to use in her homemade chocolate fudge. Hammers and concrete slabs are required just to break into these nuts. Rarely can you harvest a piece any bigger than 1/4" (6mm). These pieces are the size I was expecting. Super high quality. Great black walnut flavor. (Not a cheap English walnut. Go buy those from any grocery store or Amazon.) There is no way I would harvest these delicious black walnuts and sell them this cheaply. The labor is just far too much. I would love to see some of their automation techniques. A great buy and a delicious product! (My mom's vintage chocolate fudge with these American Black Walnuts is pictured.)

Not the quality hoped for
I grew up with black walnuts and have loved them my entire life. So, I was hoping to enjoy these, and even subscribed for monthly delivery. Upon receipt, they lacked flavor and I opted to toast them. That improved them — but not enough to have monthly delivery. Cancelled subscription.

I recommend you read this before purchasing. Especially for those new to black walnuts.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this product. If you have never tasted black walnuts, I highly recommend you do not purchase this product. At least 95% of the negative reviews are from people who have never tasted black walnuts. It is unfair to give a product a negative review just because you do not like the taste when you have never tasted black walnuts before. If you have never tasted black licorice, then there is a very high possibility that you will not like it. Black licorice, at least in the United States, is not very popular. Even fewer people like the taste of black walnuts. Black walnuts have nothing in common with the traditional English walnuts, as far as taste. If you have a look online, you will find out that black walnuts have a husk. That green husk has to turn black and mushy, before it is removed. From there you will have a very hard shell. Then you have to remove the meat, which is not easy. The black mushy husk will turn your hands black if you do not use gloves. So think about it… Do you think you will like a nut which is covered in something gross black and mushy? I highly doubt it. If you’re new to black walnuts, I recommend you try and find a product which has black walnuts in it and taste it before you purchase raw black walnuts yourself. But it is not easy to find items which have black walnuts in them. Because… Quite simply… It is not a flavor that most people enjoy. I like black walnuts, but in moderation. Certainly I think that even people who like black walnuts before them in something like banana bread and so on.
