Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream

I read this book to learn about high school football but also learned about the human heart and small town grit and glory. Very good read!

A great story about a small town football team overcoming adversity and can be considered a written classic amongst football stories. Note: it does get a little boring in some parts and the narrator on the E-book is very disengaging though.

Bought this as a audible. Not a book for youth! Thought it might be. They made a TV show out of it. It has great reviews as a book. The naration kind of sucks. think it might be narratated by the author. Please don't do that. I 've heard this is a aswesome book, but for adults and maybe you should read it and not listen to it.

I was eagerly awaiting the audio version of the 25th anniversary edition of this book after hearing an interview with the author a few months ago, and it did not disappoint. It includes a chapter on how each of the main characters' lives turned out, which really completes the book as originally written. The narrator does a good job - it is not the voice of a player, parent, or coach from Odessa, TX - it is the voice of a sport-jacket wearing professor from the east coast who views this west-Texas subculture from the outside, with empathy, but ultimately as a subject of study and critique.

I bought the book because I thought it was about west Texas football. It's not; it's about west Texas culture. And with the exception of a couple of paragraphs on the virtues of self-reliance and neighborliness, all Mr. Bissinger saw in west Texas culture was confirmation of the world view he brought with him from Philadelphia. It is the blindness of coastal intellectuals like Bissinger that have caused tens of thousands of migrants to Texas to be met by billboards that read, "Don't vote for what you are fleeing."Sam Foster
