I generally find Down to Earth to be one of the best brands for organic fertilizer. It's really good from an up-cycling perspective (because it's from waste from the meat industry) and the fertilizer usually is medium-speed absorption which I prefer over other types. The organic materials have to be broken down over time, so they provide nutrients over a few months, instead of just a couple days like a liquid fertilizer, but it tends to work faster than most slow release coated fertilizers like ozmocote. You can really see it kick in after a week or two, which is my favorite experience, suddenly the plant just looks twice as vigorous and starts budding everywhere. I prefer this medium speed because you can truly observe the nutrient absorption from the plant, vs. the guessing game of a slow release (is the plant getting enough, too much, etc.) You also can reapply throughout the season without too much risk of overdoing it, which isn't the case for a slow release, which might still be active in the soil, and you get that same thrill of seeing it absorbed late in the season. I love Down to Earth’s BioFish fertilizer, so I figured I’d give this formulation a shot. I just put in a minimal dig perennial bed and gave a small amount to each planting hole. With the BioFish that I am familiar with, I see great results in a few days, so I’m hoping for the same with this rose and flower fertilizer. I was a bit disappointed that one of my bags in the big 15 lb box was opened and poured out into the box, but it’s still usable.
